ICAA Influencers: Jim Strickland

Published 2021-09-14
In this episode of ICAA Influencers, Jim Strickland shares stories of how he founded his firm Historical Concepts, after beginning his career as a builder. When asked about the values that define his award-winning firm, he says "There's no hubris. Nobody can be a part of our firm and be arrogant or feel like they have all the answers because everybody has an answer [. . .] I hope that I can make a difference in terms of giving the credit to the contractor, giving the credit to the sub contractor, giving the credit to the carpenter, the painter, all those people who make us look so good and make it look effortless when we're photographing it."

This is the fifth episode of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art's (ICAA) new video series, “ICAA Influencers.” This five-part series interviews today’s top architects on the topic of legacy and how they were inspired and influenced by past design. Each episode reveals a remarkable variety of design inspirations that shaped one of the leading minds of classical architecture: Patrick Ahearn of Patrick Ahearn Architect, Tom Kligerman of Ike Kligerman Barkley, Peter Pennoyer of Peter Pennoyer Architects, Bobby McAlpine of McALPINE, and Jim Strickland of Historical Concepts.

The first home I constructed some 37 years ago came from a group of plans named The Tidewater Collection. Jim lived in that home and it was on the market. It needed some change and my version brought that to pass. The years have moved me along to the coastal homes of Florida where I lay new foundations and build of the classical orders. Thanks Jim for that time I began.
