Singapore is cracking down on 95 social media accounts from a foreign network that has been spreading falsehoods about the country, including claims that Singapore is under the control of a foreign actor. MHA has directly linked 92 accounts to a network founded by convicted Chinese fraudster, Guo Wengui, a vocal critic of the Chinese government who is living in exile in the US. Benjamin Ang from the Centre of Excellence for National Security at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies tells CNA's Syahida Othman how significant the timing of the crackdown is, ahead of the country's upcoming General Election.

Well done! The Phillipines was also targeted with disinformation about Chinese vaccines approved by WHO during 2020-2021.

How allegations of foreign interference was “used in a massive and destructive way” in the early-1960s during Operation Coldstore on 2 Feb 1963, in which she said that over “133 leaders of the opposition and critics of the PAP were arrested and detained without trial under the ISA”.

I already so many hate and misinformation about our leaders especially on our law minister that on many occasions report to tik tok . But no real action taken. I think our govt should imposed heavy fine on tik tok and u tube if viewers had already complained about it much earlier but did not take it done and instead wait till our govt to take action is unhealthy.
  • The reasons for not issuing POFMA directives by the Singapore ministers could be multifaceted.
  • On the other hand, POFMA has been employed without hesitation against local individuals and entities, raising questions about its perceived primary purpose.
  • Perhaps there is a concern about the international repercussions of enforcing POFMA against prestigious media outlets, entities and individuals.
  • The situation lends weight to criticisms suggesting that POFMA has become a tool for the PAP to suppress opposition and alternative voices rather than tackling disinformation.
