I drove my LZ0 (stock) 2200 miles towing 5,000lbs. Left with full DEF and added only one 2.5g Peak DEF, 1 quart of oil and averaged 16mpg cruising 65mph - 70mph. The truck ran perfect, and trans oil never got over 200F. Truck is awesome.

Love your old 62 truck. THe way you upgraded the driveline but kept alot of the old patina makes it very special.

I have a '23 AT4 with the LZO. Tow my boat here and there. 7000 miles on the truck so far, mostly highway and I've gone through 8 gallons of DEF. I've towed my 6K boat about 700 of those 7000 miles. 17MPG towing with boat in the hills of Central WA state. Power is great. Best driving truck I've owned. Last truck was a 2013 F150 FX4 SCREW with 3.5 Ecoboost. Great power in that truck and about 2-3 MPG less while towing. Rear springs of the AT4 are WAY BETTER than the Ford.

Good video! I got a SLT for 5 months ,about 16000 miles and no oil consumption to worry about , less than 1/2 quarter every oil change. I was worry about the oil consumption, so I did the break in very easy and nice, nothing crazy for this first 1000 miles and I think that worked pretty good for the engine components. So far very happy.

Great video! As you mentioned, going to the truck fill-up stations will be the best option to purchase DEF. They have high sell volume and its always fresh, plus it's way cheaper - around $2.5/gallon here in California. And of course, towing goes through def like it's thirsty 😂

I have the exact same truck. Even same color. My def goes for ever when not towing. I tow a 4k boat weekly not a huge distance. Still filling def 1 time per oil change at 5k. I use truck stop def it is MUCH CHEAPER than the jugs but I understand not everyone has a truck stop close by. Thanks for the review. Its spot on. Seats, tech issues are the same on my truck. Thanks.

You bought every upgrade except the most obvious one - a larger fuel tank! A 43 gallon titan fuel tank is the first thing I bought when I got this truck. Now my range is 1200 miles without trying.

I'm finding a difference between using the Jugs vs def from the Pump. I actually think I'm getting more DEF in the tank then I am with the Jugs. They both say full on the not so accurate gauge. However, I think the pump gives you a better top up because of the auto shut off at the pump as apposed to guessing when it's full with the jugs so you don't spill it down the side of the truck.

First off, excellent vid. Second, not trying to nitpick, but the DEF tank is 5.3 gallons. Also, you're driving along interstates for the most part. Every Love's, Pilot, etc has DEF at the big rig lanes and it is much cheaper there vs the 2.5g jugs. Yep, the LZ0 uses more DEF than the LM2 unfortunately. DEF is used to combat NOx. Higher RPM and EGTs makes more NOx. Slow down 5-10 MPH if you're extremely low or empty on DEF and need to make it somewhere to fill up. On that note, it's not like it's immediately speed limited if the DEF tank runs empty. Plus your Banks gauge should give you actual percent remaining vs the dummy bar gauge on the cluster.

my neighbor down the street just got a 2023 Chevy RST with Z71 package and the 3.0 diesel engine.
  • @guygorney3231
Enjoyed your video. I'm doing early research on the LZ0 for a Tahoe when that engine is offered for the 2025 refresh. I own a 2021 2500HD with the 6.6 Duramax and I tow a 33' 10,000# travel trailer. My 2500 gets on average 12.5 mpg with highs of 15 and lows of 11 mpg. DEF usage is about 1700 miles per tank while towing. Oil consumption is near zero, understanding this is a completely different power plant. All in my experience is very close to yours including the DEF and fueling challenges while trailering. A game changer for me is when I started using the Open Roads app which allows me to use the commercial fueling lanes at most truck stops. So fueling is easy, DEF is right there, you get bulk fueling pricing. After the fees and service charge, I see about a 30 cent per gallon savings. The real benefit is the use of the commercial lanes. A lot of RVers use the app especially the diesel motorhomes. I think the plan is limited to products on the commercial lanes, so no gasoline.

I did a 3600 km trip on my 2021 LM2 this winter towing the sled trailer loaded and was absolutely blow away by how much Def this thing used. I was 4 jugs total. I think it’s usage is high in general even when not towing. We drove from a 6600 km road trip this summer and I used 2.5 jugs. My 17 cummins burned a jug every 6 months with the same driving habits. I’m putting a jug in every 4 weeks currently. 95 percent highway driving. Regarding the oil consumption- I’m convinced the dealership oil is the problem. When I am running valvoline I don’t get any burn off. The AC Delco stuff alway burns off a quart by the time I’m down to 30%.
  • @martyanthony4116
I have a 22 trail boss with the LM2. Just finished a 2500 mile round trip with 7000lb payload in a 22’ enclosed cargo trailer. 3 containers of DEF. 1 litre of oil. 15.6 MPG overall. Not bad with the larger tire package. Average 65 MPH.

If a person is in the market for a new truck. …. I don’t know a time in history where we had more options for pure capability. These half ton trucks are amazing.
  • @thomasg9092
Thanks for the videos Tim. Get the Def blue jug only if necessary. Every tuck is different. Usage is general and so many variables. Where you are and how you drive and time of year are biggies. Yes, GM needs larger fuel and Def tanks. Generally I drive easier then many people. I get less mileage with mine, but I use far less Def then you do and others I've heard about. The " you are set to driver 2" message you talk about, and being a probable tech issue? No it isn't a tec problem. It's Operator error. To fix that, start using the other key fob. The key fobs are what determines the setting there. Key fob 1 and key fob 2= Driver 1 and Driver 2. Or program it with the easy out button. We love ours. Happy driving.

Just some additional information. I took my ‘23 GMC SIERRA with the LZ0 on a 2800 mile road trip (no towing, starting mileage about 6000). I averaged 27.9 mpg, used about 2 gallons of DEF, and added 16 ounces of Mobil 1 ESP X2 oil (0W-20) to bring it back to full. Probably about 95% highway driving.
  • @brianklump
When I ordered my 2019 Revel I was able to option in a 33 gallon tank. Worth every penny of that extra $500. Every full size truck should have a 30+ gallon tank as (at least) an option.
  • @marcvallee-xj9iu
I have a 2021 Silverado RST (LM2 3.0 duramax engine) since 32 months with almost 50k miles on it. The 2 first oil changes were done at the dealer for free. It was a deal they had when I bought it new in Ontario, Canada. I change the engine oil every 6k miles. After the 2 first oil changes I've been doing the oil changes myself with Amsoil engine oil. It burn alot less engine oil since I've switch to Amsoil!! For DEF it hardly use any without a trailer or with a small trailer (2500 lbs.) behind it. But hook a bigger trailer on it (like 8000 lbs.) and the DEF tank will go down quite a bit faster on it especially if you push it!!
  • @ravensfootball52
It’s just crazy that a modern engine burns oil. I always thought that was a bad thing. I wouldn’t want my truck burning oil making me check it frequently
