The Final Breath: The threat to life in the Amazon | Dying Earth: E5 | Featured Documentary

Published 2024-05-08
Exploring the effect of industrial development in the Amazon and the deadly battles to protect this vital rainforest.

Time is running out for the Amazon. Years of unmitigated deforestation have pushed the world’s biggest rainforest to the brink of no return.

The film The Final Breath takes us on a journey to Ecuador through its tropical terrain and brings to light the effects climate change has had on what has commonly become known as the “lungs of the world”. It is a megadiverse country with four different regions, each with a unique natural wealth, a variety of ecosystems and species of plants and animals. It is also home to some of the last Indigenous people on Earth who continue to live in isolation, as well as some of the country’s largest oil reserves. As a result, corporations continue to drill in one of the most environmentally important ecosystems on the planet, moving closer to off-limits zones meant to protect Indigenous people.

This episode explores the ongoing war between big business and climate protectors, and how the Indigenous continue to live and fight climate change despite the threat faced by their homeland.

  • Al Jazeera is a reliable source for me. I have been watching Aljazeera since I was 10. Now I am 27.. my love for this media cannot be expressed in words❤️❤️
  • The fact that we get free videos on YouTube by Al Jazeera English is truly a gift; keeping the education and knowledge alive. 👏👏👏 May I also remind you of the fact that our Native American population in our motherland, the Continent of America before the European Colonizers arrived, was around 15 millions, while the European population in their motherland, the Continent of Europe was around 25 millions. Today, Native American population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering TWO BILLION! A shockingly sad truth. 😔 In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return to rightful owners Native American people. Notorious global cardinal crimes the Christian West has committed, and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 🤷
  • Thank you to this channel. I am Ecuadorian. This brought tears to my eyes. I pray for a better future for the entire country and for our many tribal communities. They are our wisdom keepers.

Excelente documental!
  • Outstanding documentary i would like to appreciate al Jazeera for this amazing work done by their reporters for exposing the truth of such government globally. Keep it up 👏
  • Thank AJ! This was very important reporting for the world to be aware of the Amazon in Ecuador. One way we can all help is to donate to Native Tribe Organizations and buy artisan arts from Natives. Government corruption and greed will not end any time soon. But if we equipped the Natives with education, technology, etc. they can show the world what’s happening and form a team to sue the government and foreign oil companies. 🙏🤲👍👏🤝💪🥰

Save the planet for Life is regardless of human existence。
  • Beautiful Documentary 👌 Hope all big companies(making billions of dollars profit year after year) around Amazon Forest, responsible for contaminating water and polluting Air Quality should get fined and punished accordingly. Indigenous peoples should also get equal rights like civil society (education, health care and proper living environment). 🤞✌️
  • Gracias por sus voces y por su alma buena 🌞🌞🌞✊✊✊🌱🌱🌱💫💫💫
