Lyrics:
He's going the distance
He's going for speed
She's all alone (All alone)
All alone in her time of need
Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse
He's going the distance

The bass line on this song is so damn smooth.

I've always liked John McCrea's delivery. He's half singing, half spoken word, kind of like Lou Reed.

I LOVE the part when he sings…he’s going for speed…and it is slightly off beat. It sounds so cool.

Growing up its a song about racing. When you're grown up, its a song about endurance

"Bowel shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse Assail him, impale him with monster truck force" - one of the greatest lyrics of all time.
  • @adamb6209
Legend has it that he's still racing and pacing and plotting the course.

Much as I dislike the wife I’m divorcing, I'll be forever grateful to her for introducing me to this great band!
  • @MetaruOfficial
This song has the most legendary bassline in my opinion. When the chorus baseline hits, it just gives me chills.
  • @RCAvhstape
Whenever someone questions the need for a good bass player, play this song for them.
  • Who is here 13 years later? I just found out about this song on Saturday. Holy hell this song is so good

Profound. "The Distance" is a song by American alternative rock band Cake. Released in August 1996, "The Distance" was the first single from the band's second album, Fashion Nugget, and is considered one of their most popular songs.[4] It was written by the band's guitarist at the time, Greg Brown. "It is a song about success and failure, and failure of success, really," said McCrea in 2019. "It's a sad song, because there is no success. You can explode into the world with great magnificence, and still feel like the guy underneath the Mickey Mouse head, with the fan batteries that have stopped working properly, and it's dark under there, and everybody wants your autograph."[5] IMHO it's dark because you still haven't found your purpose and still on the hamster wheel running as fast as you possibly can but getting no where.

Of all the songs with a melodica, deadpan vocals, and mariachi style trumpet flourishes, this has to be in the top five of all time.
  • Ah yes, a song about a man who despite the odds, despite his romantic circumstances, and despite artificial goals constructed by others, continues indeed, to go the distance... Beautiful.
  • @CPUMaster500
When I was growing up in the 90s, this song was THE JAM in the roller skating rink on Friday nights
  • @jfees21
cake just casually drops the most beautiful song ive ever heard in my life
  • @jonbbaca5580
This band epitomized the time when it was actuality truly cool to be un-ironically uncool.
  • When I describe Cake to people (not a common thing), I like to say..."Imagine if Frank Sinatra was raised on The Doors, then went through a metal phase before he discovered his true passion was 90s hip hop.
  • This song is so well written and preformed. Master class in musical theory! Gold star Cake.
