Woodie's unquestioned number one athlete. We have unparalleled access to Big Red -- his owner , the cover girl Penny Tweedy -- the horse's syndicator, the legendary Clairborne Farm. Woodie visits Secretariat's Kentucky birthplace just after the royal mating and before anyone knew who Secretartiat was - goes to Penny Tweedy's Virginia farm to see her other Kentucky Derby winner and doesn't know that Secretariat is out there romping with the other unknown horses - and provides perspective for CBS Sports on their Triple Crown telecasts of the first TC winner in 25 years. It is "living history" and pure poetry .No one covered Secretariat like Heywood Hale Broun.

  • Secretariat is all alone! He's moving like a tremendous machine! Big Red will always be the best race horse in history. His record at Belmont will never be broken.

Secretariat touched people’s hearts. We all fell in love that spring and summer with a super horse, Secretariat. A handsome specimen that could never be matched in the field or on the track, Big Red! He was breathtaking. There will never be another Secretariat!
  • 1981, my 4 daughters, and I visited Cliaborne Farm during a vacation trip to FL and had the honor of meeting Secretariat live in-person. Two weeks later we visited again during the trip home. Secretariat perked right up. I asked his caretaker if Secretariat actually remembered us, mostly my daughters. He said that Secretariat was highly intelligent and remembered everybody. The caretaker gave each of my 4 daughters an aluminum horseshoe that Secretariat had once used. My 4 daughters still have those horseshoes today and a bunch of photographs from both of those visits.

How is it that after watching Secretariat win the Belmont well over a 100 times I still get goosebumps and choke up. I never tire of watching him win the triple crown races. This magnificent horse seems to touch all of us and stir our emotions. It’s incredible that 50 years later people are still moved by Secretariat. He will never be forgotten. I watch the recent triple crown races and a couple of horses have won the TC in recent years. I respect them but they don’t have the emotional impact on me that Secretariat did. It’s not their fault. I don’t think any horse will ever mean so much to the people in the country as he did. It’s also astonishing that fifty years later his track records still hold up. It’s said that all records are made to be broken. I generally agree with that theory but not in this case. The Belmont was a supernatural performance. Today’s modern day horses can’t even sniff at his time of 2:24 flat. They’re usually around three seconds slower which is approximately 20 lengths in distance and these horses are the best of what today can offer. It was the greatest sports accomplishment in history by the greatest athlete in history. There will never be another Secretariat!!

I wasn't born when he ran, but for some reason I can't stop watching this perfect horse.
  • I remember Secretariat with that checker blue and white saying who is that horse. Not knowing he would end up being someone you would never forget. Happy Anniversary BIG RED

Thank you Eddie Sweat for the Greatest grooming jobs of a horse we have ever witnessed!!
  • Every time I hear his name I get chills. I'm so lucky to have lived during this time. Watching him run brings tears. I can't explain it, I can only feel it.
  • @KC80009
Go out while you’re on top!! I was 13 when I saw him run. My nose was pressed to the tv. I had a horse and she was my life. Horses are soulful creatures. I am so happy to have had the experience of theses wonderful souls!!
  • The GREATNESS just radiated from this animal, despite the slight setbacks in his career caused by human error. What a LEGACY!!

Yes! I was one of those chosen (Elmont is my hometown) to be there in person on that extremely hot Saturday to see Secretariat win the Belmont and Triple Crown!!! I can still feel the floor of the grandstand vibrating to the stomping of our collective feet and roar of the crowd all rooting for Secretariat as we saw the ever widening gap to our amazement and joy!!! Never forget that. How lucky were we to see him and often!!!

Heywood Hale Broun is a worthy chronicler of this Great Horse. I miss him as well. Never another like him.
  • @gallop-ux7nh
Secretariat is the standard by which all other race horses are measured. He was simply -- the greatest.

Ms. Chenery said they were "anxious times". Having been there I must agree. The more films I watch and books I read about Red, the more I see that all the people around him were wholesome, caring folks. Can't say I know much about the people raising and racing other horses, but I still feel the calmness all of Red's people displayed those 2 years he raced. One and all when they spoke to the media they were low keyed and conscious of how people needed to feel some calm from some direction. And Red was different in that he was nice to other horses, other handlers, even the fans who were at the Preakness and could have ruined the race hanging over the rail! We sure need someone to some how give us that kind of calm today. It would help us remember we are friends from coast to coast and grace and courtesy are what we owe our fellow citizens. Anxious times indeed.
