The Breen Unmasked! Star Trek Reveals Their Faces, And It Changes The Dominion War

Published 2024-04-26
One of the biggest mysteries in all of Star Trek has been the Breen. We've only ever seen them with their faces and forms hidden behind a mask and a bulky cooling suit. That changed with Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episode 5. Now we know exactly what the Breen look like.

The episode is called Mirrors and not only do the Breen reveal their faces, but we learn key facts about them which help explain their alliance with The Founders during The Dominion War and their subsequent attack on Earth.

The only issue I have with this is in DS9, both Worf and Kira knock out two Breen and take their uniforms. In that time they would have had a level of intelligence gathering.

I consider this to be as valid as Discoveries Klingon redesign. This is a Skrull.

I'll admit, this reveal wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it could've been far, FAR better. The Typhon Pact novel series handled the reveal of the Breen exceptionally well, revealing them to almost be a mirror of the Federation of sorts: At least a dozen different species forming a single Confederacy. Unlike the Federation's "infinite diversity in infinite combinations" spiel though, the Confederacy is a militaristic police state whose people collectively take the name Breen and wear the suits as a means of both enforcing societal conformity and eliminating societal bias. The suits are adapted to fit all of the species within the Confederacy, including built in environmental adaptations (cooling systems for the cold-dwelling, liquid-based Amoniri) and physical adaptations (snouted helmets for the lupine Fenrisal), and thus they all appear uniform. It's a damned shame that the Discovery people didn't just canonize that version. But, then again, being Discovery, I question if it would've been handled well.

I didn't think the answer they came up with was that great. Everything Discovery does is "meh."
  • No one is mentioning that the Breen look like a cross species between The Sphere Builders and The Changelings.

The reveal should have been amazing. But no, it's just an uninspired CGI face that took a few minutes to create. Probably was just colored green with a drag and drop shader and rendered minutes later.
  • Why why why! The Breen were so cool being dangerous and mysterious. They have never taken the helmets off the Breen. Like they should never reveal where Yoda people are from. Discovery keeps discovering ways to ruin Star Trek 🤬🤬 it should have been cancel 2 seasons ago!

It’s not really Star Trek, so there is that.
  • @teabeasley
This video didn't get it quite right. The solid form the Breen take is held through focus. The suits allow them to not have to focus on being solid.
  • Leave it up to STD to infect another area of Star Trek with its lazy, incoherent writing. How does refrigeration increase elasticity or even allow for a gelatinous state??? I would think that being in a refrigeration suit is the opposite of flexible, on top of breaking the laws of physics. And of course he acts like a high school girl around his girl boss lover. This garbage needs to end already. I will give a praise on the Breen suits and sets, though. The art department did their job well.

Reason #249 why I’m glad I don’t watch Discovery. Just as unnecessary as other current bs Trek shows 🤦🏻‍♂

What I would like to know is, was this idea for the Breen new, or conceptualized 34 years ago?
  • Thought they needed to be in a very hot environment hence why we never saw them out of their suits.. This series is absolute crap..... like babies trying to write sci fi,,,
