It’s the new housing trend. Entire private neighbourhoods – sometimes spanning several hundreds of hectares and complete with luxury facilities, private schools and shops – all under extreme security and banned to non-residents.

In gated communities like MacDonald Highlands, residents can dine at private restaurants, play a game of tennis or enjoy a round of golf. They have their own personal trainers permanently on-call. But life here isn’t cheap. Just the obligatory gym and club memberships come to over $700 a month. And, in addition to the high maintenance charges, residents are expected to adopt a certain lifestyle and comply with strict regulations. At MacDonald Highlands, among the many rules, it is forbidden for children under 14 to walk around alone. Also banned is the use of skateboards and scooters and making noise after 10pm. Offences like not taking down Christmas lights within the required period or having a less-than-immaculate garden are all punished with a fine.

It used to be that these gated communities were home only to super-rich Americans but now they’re appearing across the globe and are shaping new residences of the future. Over in Marseille, security-conscious real estate owners have petitioned the City Council to erect barriers and close off entire neighborhoods. The first gated community has opened in Sofia, Bulgaria.

But as more and more people take refuge behind walls, will the remaining public space be turned into a giant ghetto?

  • I lived in a high end community like this for about 10 years. The rules/HOA, lack of friendly neighbors (because they were too busy working, traveling), got old. We left and live on 20 acres in the country on a home we built ourselves. I can even walk outside nude and no one will see me. That’s what you call freedom.

I lived in a Canadian federal gated community, was released after 4 1/2 yrs.

After watching this I was overwhelmed with gratitude for what I have. I live in a pristine village in comfort and utter freedom. I gaze across the ocean to the snow topped mountains and Thank God for placing me there.
  • To each his own but If I’m paying millions of dollars on my home even half a mill I’m not going to be living amongst all them rules. I’m team buy my land and build my home away from a subdivision. I can blast my music as loud as I want and there are no time restrictions. This is insane lmao

I live in Vegas and have been into that community. Vegas is notorious for gated communities. Its a very transient town with lots of sketchy people coming through. Even lower priced communities are gated. Its the norm here and not a big deal that this documentary makes it out to be.

5.5 million dollar home - I couldn’t help but chuckle at the tiny tv in the bathroom 🤭
  • I agree with them! At least in a gated community, when you go on vacation, you don't have to worry about squatters invading your property and refusing to leave your home!
  • It’s a sign of the times we are living in . Personally I am waiting to live in a world where we will live in a peaceful new world for free my dear God has promised me . I will be there living in peace and security

The security at the entrance is why I’d live in this type of community! I have so many weirdos coming on to my street (at night) doing weird things. I hate it 😂

I LOVE my small mountain cabin nestled near waterfalls with moutain lions, bears, peace, no horns, no traffic, no unsightly views of buildings. It’s paradise

I like the way the husbands in such places are always quiet and mostly have nothing to say😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I live in a gated community mainly for security. It takes time to get used to the rules and regulations but once you get used to it's lovely.

I refuse to live anywhere with a HOA. I'm not paying anyone for the privilege to tell me what I can and can't do with my own property.

I predicted this would come to pass several years ago, as residential crime continues to increase and get more out of control each day.People with means are looking for a more secure place to live.We will continue to see more and more of these very high end secure communities being built as time move forward. thanks
  • Who needs this ridiculous amount of space? For 2 people with no children, this defies reason and logic.
  • @johnnymays4203
It's a dangerous world and these people aren't paying millions of dollars for a home their paying it for security and anonymity.
  • All that money and a scraggly Christmas light strand hanging off a broken gate. Crazy.

I cannot imagine a duller existence than living in a gated community. No "oomph" to life, no rubbing shoulders with all kinds of interesting people from all sectors of society. This is like choosing to eat oatmeal every day instead of sampling from an ever changing buffet.

You guys should come to South Africa, this has been a norm for many many many years
