I immediately thought of the Genji armor pieces in Final Fantasy V. You needed either a thief or someone with the Steal command in the encounters with Gilgamesh, and you had to steal them before the battle ended.

I'm going through Dragon's Dogma and how easy it is to mess up the quest to get the Golden Idol which unlocks some weapons on 1 of 2 shops that carries on to NG+ is crazy

Every time a list like this comes up, the first Surprise Box in Mario RPG should always be mentioned. You get one shot to make a jump to grab a hidden chest that you didn’t know was a thing at the beginning of the game, and missing it means you can never find every Surprise Box and complete that (otherwise meaningless) side mission.

It's easy to forget that being able to only go to areas in RPGs once used to be standard design.

You missed Nakrin's staff which is unique and challenging to get as it activates the escape portal so the only way to get it is to grab it as you fall into the exit portal.

Neverwinter Nights 2 was not 'D&D inspired', it was D&D. Neverwinter is a location in the Forgotten Realms setting, and it uses a simplified version of D&D3.5 rules.
  • The Shield Weaver armor from Horizon Zero Dawn. One of the power cells you need to unlock it is inside All Mother Mountain and you only get in there twice during the game but only once after you know to look for the cells.

Zodiac Spear in FF12 (original version) was theee most obscure weapon I’ve ever seen, almost impossible to get without a guide too! This has obviously changed in the newer version of the game

I immediately thought of Fallout New Vegas and the cram opener on the character Little Buster. After all the fiend leaders are defeated, Little Buster will leave. 2 days later, his corpse will be by the train tracks. If the player did not pickpocket or find his body, it will eventually despawn...
  • The hidden chest in super Mario rpg. Only time you can get is in the beginning of the game BEFORE you ever know it’s there. Even when you know where it is, it takes a lot of tries to get the timing right for it.

The Uzi's in the original Tomb Raider game. They could only be found in one specific level. And you had to make a series of jumps on invisible ledges in mid air to get to the point where you finally could grab the weapons.

Something I felt that should be added, in Fallout 3 when you witness your Dad succumb to the radiation inside Project Purity, you can manipulate the camera to loot him and Autumn for their unique weapons and armor. Doing this actually allows Autumn (who I’ll never understand how he survived that) to carry a second unique weapon during the last mission of the main game, which is semi pointless since the game ends right after that. (not counting the Broken Steel DLC that was added later that lets you keep going post game)
  • 5:30 As an Arcane Warrior, there is actually a hidden secret doorway you can interact with in one of the Ancient Elven Tombs that leads to unique fade statues with a greater bonus to the ones found earlier- Yet I've never once found a video on them
  • I can think of a item that should be on this list, the snakish sword from phantom brave. The best way to get it is to obtain a certain character in the beginning with high speed to get the sword in the weapon tutorial mission
  • Barret's Ultimate Weapon in original FF7 was my first time experience this kind of situation I had to bail on saving and replay a late section again because if Barret isnt with you then the item box doesnt appear and you never get to return to the area, this also forces you to use Barret for a certain few bosses as a fight is right after his weapon box appearance
  • I played a game as a kid called aero elite combat academy on the PS2. There was a feature where, randomly throughout your game, you would get a scramble alert. You had to quickly kit out an aircraft you'd unlocked, take off, chase down a target, shoot it down, and land again. If you crashed or died, you lost that plane permanently. I vividly remember getting scrambled, grabbing my f15, and going to take off when I got buzzed by a UFO!! I had to fly as fast as I could to catch up with it, accidentally dropped my external fuel pods, and ran out of fuel before I could catch up. To this day, I can't find any video on it and nobody believes me. So immersive

The Skyrim mask one isn't really easy to miss. You literally HAVE to kill the dragon Priest to get his staff to open the portal, and by then its pretty clear those masks are collectible items.

I would be interested in seeing more Rare items in other video games, perhaps even the more obscure ones...

while not important items, but important for lore, in the Trails/Kiseki series, you can find these books throughout the game but they're at very specific times and if you miss the very very small window to obtain them, they're gone forever (though you can still trigger them in the pawn shops later down the line, but that's based on RNG)

Cyberpunk 2077: If you wanted to do a Katana-build you'd better make sure you double check everything in the intro-mission where you infiltrate the Arasaka company. When you get to the top floor where you need to be you get to explore a big room, but you can't go outside on the balcony because the glass doors are shut. After you get what you need and watching a pretty long event the alarm goes off and you have to get out of there quickly while the game points you to the escape route and gives you the illusion that enemies are coming to you. What it doesn't tell you is that those glass doors to the balcony on the other side of the room are now suddenly unlocked and you can open them. If you go through them and up some stairs outside you get on top of the roof where an helicopter is with a katana inside. This katana is one of the strongest, if not THE strongest katana you can get in the game and if you miss it in this moment you'll won't be able to get it again unless doing a New Game. For the next 20-30 hours you won't get a katana even nearly as strong and people probably googled where to find a better katana after about 10 hours only to find out they missed it and have to play all over again if the want it.
