The Hindi vs English row recently hit the civil services exams as aspirants said the UPSC is biased against Hindi-medium students. On We The People, we debate: Is English a must-know language to be a bureaucrat? And is English the language of elitism or economic mobility?

  • Do not split India into south and north in the name of language. English is the best for progress and prosperity. Make English a link language so even the world can be linked.

APJ Abdul Kalam studied in Tamil medium and he has contributed more than many people in the panel.

I believe the Government, instead of spending money uselessly on trying to impose Hindi in India, that money should be used to build toilets in North India. Thank you
  • I am a Kannadiga. The only languages I know are Kannada and English. I don't feel necessary to speak any other language in my state. I will surely learn Bengali When I stay in Bengal. Similarly Tamil - Tamil Nadu, Gujarati- Gujarat, Marathi- Maharashtra, Kerala- Malayalam, Odisha- Odia, etc etc.... Hindi has got nothing to do with us. It should be learnt only in Delhi, UP, MP, Bihar, etc.

Tamil nadu people don't want to Hindi as national language.
  • Mr.Former Cricketer, 99% Tamilians are educated and most of them speak better english than u. So dont go around throwing stereotyped opinions like a person from Tamilnadu wont be able to speak proper english??
  • @MRL-sl9ih

Hindi is a Pakistani language... boycott this foreign language
  • Hindi was never an option.. I speak English and Bengali. And would speak Hindi only for my advantage. Not for a Marwari, Punjabi's advantage in my State. And it's best left that way. Hindi is majority's language. Not National language.

what is the point in promoting hindi now??? useless debate...we south have our own langauge..
  • In Singapore, Malaysia if you (Indian) say I would like to learn Chinese in school they will laugh at you. They will say 'you learn your language - we will learn ours" "If you learn our language what we should do learn , some other language?'. Only our Hindi guys want their language to be everywhere on this earth.

I can't follow what they say in Hindi in this debate. English subtitles would have been good. Also, Tamil subtitles would benefit millions in Tamil Nadu.

It is claimed that Hindi should be the common language because it is spoken by the majority. Why should we then claim the tiger as our national animal instead of the rat which is so much more numerous? Or the peacock as our national bird when the crow is ubiquitous?                                                                                          - C.N.Annadurai

India is not a nation. India is bharath (union of state) and lot of nation is India
  • @roobenrem9698
As far as Hindi is concerned, it has only one threat - English. But for any other Indian language it is both Hindi and English.
  • What..? 53% people speaks in hindi... Why the percentage.. India is most (almost) populated country in the world... Telugu is 2nd most with 10 million people.. Which is more population than 105 countrys.. So stop bringing percentages in to the debit... English is more adaptable in county like India.. Want to be unity.. Think big and make the world unite by making English as global language...
