This series has accidentally been the most compelling "Under absolutely no circumstances should you buy a Subaru" advertisement ever.

This series has quickly become a season of money pit

Nolan's "that's my boss" straight up broke me 😂😂😂😂
  • I’m glad Donut still does high quality videos like this and not solely easy click bait / reaction stuff. This channel has blown up but it’s still maintained what brought me in the first place.

"If it's leaking oil, it still has oil in it" -Subaru Tech that I used to work with
  • @noobiii
despite 7 or 8 engines being ruined they're still trying to keep this series going, that's dedication right there
  • @DumptruckDAV3
im really glad they listed all the supporting mods they needed to get to make this work. I was always curious in previous builds

I half rolled my 06 wrx in poor conditions last year on November 11th 2021 at 257k miles. I didn't have the funds to repair the roof and A-pillar but I had my spare 04 2.5rs shell that was WRX swapped by the previous owner. Sometime in October a couple months back I finally got the motivation to see if the engine was still saveable, did an oil change, primed the oil system and after plugging the fuel relay back in she fired right over. Ran her through a few heatcycles to rule out any possible gremlins and she checked out. Still felt excruciatingly hopeless considering it was the factory longblock that I refreshed the heads on at 239k and added some reliability focused upgrades/mods. When I drained the oil I was pleasantly surprised to find no shavings or excessive metal indicating any failure. Coolant was old but clean of any foreign contaminants So ive been in the process of swapping my 06's engine, drivetrain, subframe's, engine/chassis harness and full interior (dash and all) into the 04 shell after doing a full teardown on that one too. I've owned my 06 since 2015, she's my heart and soul and ever since i wrecked her ive been lost. So I revived her into a new body so she can live on and be alive once more. I'm so close to finishing the swap, at the end of today she will breathe life once again after the seats are installed, rear subframe, drivetrain, engine, and new whiteline suspension components. Yeah Subarus get a bad rep, but they tend to find THEIR owners. Ones who will love them unconditionally and take care of them. You can still have so much fun and get so much enjoyment out of these cars but the important points to achieve that are PRIORITIZE PREVENATIVE MAINTENANCE AND RELIABILITY FOCUSED SUPPORTING MODS. You have to start with a solid foundation before you can build on it.

For anyone wondering about the slimy bags, it’s a coating of oil the manufacturer puts on to prevent them from rusting while they sit in warehouses and shipping containers for several months or even years.

I have no idea what the financials of Donut Media look like but I get so scared every time they have to replace an engine or anything like that. I really love this series and I hope it stays financially viable for the foreseeable future!
  • This season of HiLow has accidentally become an extra season of Money Pit
  • Pro ( not a pro ) Tip - but it’s always a good idea to do a oil change before doing a major upgrade . Even if u may have to drain the oil again you will find issues like metal in oil and save yourself a lot of time not having to take new parts back off . Done multiple upgrades over the years and this saved me atleast a days worth of work twice so far .

I love how every episode just about has required a new engine. This is an expensive series 😂
  • @sohctony
I believe this series really puts it in perspective how little these guys research before going into a project.
  • @earlfoss99
That first drag down the track is what these videos are all about. Love it!
  • @bp8023
You guys should give out awards at the end of the year. Categories of “best mechanic,” “best driver,” “fan favorite presenter,” and “most likely to wreck a car.”
  • I'm not a car guy, crease monkey, motor head, or any other way to express that I know anything else beyond a google search with cars. These videos are soo fun to watch and I greatly appreciate all he work put into these videos. Thank you!
  • Shout out to Nolan, whos noticeably learned and changed a ton since the start of these series. Props to you man.
