The Easy Way to Propagate Hydrangeas From Cuttings

Published 2023-08-04
The only thing better than hydrangeas? More hydrangeas! If you're looking to grow more hydrangeas (and not spend a dime), this video is for you! This beautiful plant with showy blooms is a staple in any southern yard, and it's easier than you think to propagate. I'll show you a quick, easy, and cheap way to propagate hydrangeas at home.

The first step to hydrangea propagation is getting a cutting from the mother plant. To begin, you'll want to take some softwood cuttings from your hydrangea. Don't forget to thoroughly disinfect your pruners before you get started! Also, you'll want to have an empty, well-washed plastic jug (a milk jug works great) in order to create a mini greenhouse; this will help keep your hydrangea cuttings humid while they propagate.

Hydrangea macrophylla is the variety that we'll be propagating in this video. I love the light blue color of this hydrangea in particular. We should have some roots in about a month or so, so be sure to subscribe to Grass Roots Gardening for an update, as well as more great content on gardening, landscaping, and all things plants.
Thanks for watching, y'all!

Now you have 8,001 subscribers! Thank you for showing us how to propagate hydrangeas. I love their deep, beautiful color. my animals never do anything on video either lol! I also loved how you explained about your hydrangeas because you had to take the tree down and you have to prop up your gutter, because this is life it’s not perfect. Thank you for your channel.

I had a 5' x 8'' blue hydrangea that grew in Middle Georgia (zone 8) in full sun by my pool with reflecting concrete. It was always a show stopper - I guess over 25 years old when I moved away. They do adapt!

When inserting the cutting into dirt, doesn't the rooting hormone just rub off on the dirt while you're pushing the cutting down? I've always used a new chop stick or pencil to create a hole first, then insert cutting. Thanks for sharing! I never have cut the leaves in half!
  • Thank you so much - I must have watched at least ten videos on this topic - this one made the most sense to me. Easy to follow - you explain everything very well - thank you again

  • @Garden-Oasis
The interesting thing about hydrangeas is that they have the ability to root all along the stem. So that angle cut at the bottom isn’t needed. Just an interesting tidbit I thought I’d pass along 😊. great video 👍 btw
