Analogue Super NT Unboxing, Firmware Update Tutorial, Menu Tinkering, and some Gameplay and Talk!

Published 2023-07-21
In this video I unbox my newly-received Super NT, a FPGA clone of the Super NES/Super Famicom, created by Analogue. Afterwards I show what's needed to update the firmware to the latest jailbreak as well as how to do it. Then, we'll take a look through the feature-rich menu system. After that we'll demo a few games running on this console with and without filters applied.

This was off-the-cuff and I tried to trim a lot of the fat, but needless to say it's not perfect and I ran into some issues during our testing. Regardless, I hope you enjoy it! I had fun making it.

Hey folks, I hope you enjoyed this video! A couple clarifications as it's been brought up in a few comments. First, to jailbreak the console, you literally just need to drag/drop the jailbreak file over to the SD card, pop the SD card into the console, and it will start updating automatically. Second, it wasn't explained in the video (primarily because I forgot this is needed to be done), but you do want a BIOS folder on the SD card with all the proper special chip files (DSP-1, for instance). Without these, games that need them will not load. Third, all those extra folders you see are custom folders I made to sort my games and other things (like SPC music files). Lastly, I wanted to note that the gameplay footage at the end looks a bit softer than it's supposed to. This is because I had to shrink the footage down during capturing because of the jailbreak's higher resolution file menu. I then blew the footage back up in my editing software, causing a softer image. The Super NT outputs a ridiculously crisp image, so what you see here in this video is not indicative of what you will see in person. Awesome stuff, Austin! I love my Super NT. I am also excited about my retro USB AVS in September 😊
  • @scottlinux
Great video! I own one of these and must admit I learned quite a bit about the menu options that I never knew. Thank you,
  • @MaximumRD
Very nice Austin, no doubt you will make great use of it! Have fun!

Nice Austin, I’m so glad I kept hold of mine when I got the mister (I seem to remember you sold your mega SG and Super Nt to fund the cost of that). I need to do the latest firmware but I always put it off because it erases all my settings every time you do it, which is no small thing to put back.

Interesting Video Austin. I have been waiting for my Analogue pocket since Jan 2022.....Also, I think first video I watched of yours was the framemeister unboxing, shortly after I bought one

I love my Analogue consoles! Those, as well as my Retron5 before them, were what really got me back into 8 and 16-bit gaming. I bought the Mega SG when it was originally released, then got into the Super NT about 2 years ago. I actually ended up with 3 Super NTs, though not at the same time; Super Famicom version, SNES version, and the all black version. Sadly, the SNES one that I got directly from Analogue has some kind of video issue, and their tech support never got back to me about it. The other two I bought from eBay work perfectly, so go figure.

Super R-Type is awesome. I first played it in 1991 when my friend got his SNES before I got mine. :)

I have received my final run SuperNt too, this is my 2nd as I have a Ghostly Edition I wanted to put away for safe keeping. I got the SF version too. Also as an FYI there is a modded version of R-Type which uses some of the hardware better and has zero slowdown.

I'm not going to buy one of these so don't spend a lot of time researching this, I'm just curious if Super Road Blaster (a.k.a. Road Avenger on the Sega CD) plays on this? It plays on my SD2SNES but I was just curious if the game plays on the Super NT?
  • @JGRICH61
Hi great video. Can you please explain the BIOS folder you included, did you skip that step?

@GameplayandTalk: Hey there I have this issue: I get a pop up saying that this game pak is not designed for use on my super famicom/super nes. I am from EU and so are my cartridges (DK Country). By now I figured that if u switch it to PAL they work but only with 1080 60 fps which is weird. 1080 with 50 fps on pal still gets me that error. The problem is that even with PAL and 1080 60FPS the video quality is really bad. Is there any suggestions, thank you. I am on a Samsung AU 7100 65 inch tv.

Question what are ppl using for game capture I have elgato and im getting picture but no sound. How is everyone getting around this?
  • It is such a shame they aren't going to be making these anymore, i would love to have bought one, missed opportunity by the manufacturers of these consoles to stop making them too as they could have made a fortune if they had kept them on the market.
