Thousands of protesters gathered in Belgrade on Saturday to oppose the reopening of a controversial lithium mine, a project central to Europe’s green energy transition. The Anglo-Australian company Rio Tinto is developing the mine near Loznica, but concerns over environmental impacts have fueled public outcry. Demonstrators chanted anti-Rio Tinto slogans, blocked roads, and halted trains at the city’s main station. The Serbian government had halted the project in 2022 due to protests, but recently revived it after a court ruling. Activists are demanding a permanent ban on lithium and boron mining in Serbia.
