Rick Steves' Europe © 2016 | Five hundred years ago, Martin Luther kicked off the Protestant Reformation, which contributed to the birth of our modern age. In this one-hour special — filmed on location in Europe — Rick Steves tells the story of a humble monk who lived a dramatic life. Rick visits key sites relating to the Reformation (including Erfurt, Wittenberg, and Rome) and explores the complicated political world of 16th-century Europe — from indulgences to iconoclasts, and from the printing press to the Counter-Reformation. It’s a story of power, rebellion, and faith that you’ll never forget. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #martinluther

  • I belong to the Roman Catholic Church but it is good to learn more about Luther's side of the story through this documentary. It is very informative and gave me another perspective of the faith. Thank you very much...
  • Absolutely fabulous narrative . I truly admire Martin Luther. He stuck to his convictions in spite of powerful opposition and opened a totally new chapter in our understanding and practice of Christianity . Brave man.
  • What a wonderful documentary, we are deeply indebted to you Rick Steve's. This documentary should be preserved for posterity for the young people to know how religious freedom obtained. Yes a painstaking amount of hard work and research went to make this audio visual splendor. Finally we want more

I love this. I count myself very blessed to have had the chance to go to Europe. I went with my girlfriend and her parents in Aug, 1990. I got to see the Vatican, and several other cathedrals. This is a very powerful story. With lots of very important lessons to be learned. I hope that the people who see this are as moved as I was. I love the sound of a pipe organ. Thank you.

This was my favorite Rick Steves program. I like learning about all of the European places and their history, but very little has affected my life and the society I live in like the European struggle to understand and appropriate their understanding of God.

I was blessed to go "In the Footsteps of Martin Luther" in 2000 with a group led by a Lutheran pastor from Arlington, Tx. It was an unforgettable 2-wk tour & there were many Lutherans from USA. We visited that year in order to attend the world famous Passion Play, performed every 10 years by the people of the little town of Oberammergau. It was an experience I will never forget! We visited site of Luther's birth and death. It was all very educational & inspirational.

Thank you Rick Steves and your team for producing and presenting this important episode in history so clearly. It certainly puts more recent wars into perspective for me.

Luther's contribution to modern day Christianity is beyond words. Truly, this man was a world shaker that should never be forgotten.

Rick. Thanks for the Church history as a member of the CofE I enjoyed your discussion of Martin Luther and his later companions. The history of Rome as the thoughts of Luther about church and power and helping the poor not gaining power for power.Great thoughts from this program thanks,Like the session a history session of the reformation.
  • Outstanding documentary Mr. Rick Steves. I love church history and I am always looking forward to my next trip to the "Luther Trail" for further hands-on study :). God Bless.
  • Like Abraham Lincoln, I find myself drawn to Martin Luther every October 31 as his personality and bravery still calls to us. Truly a brave man! I can only imagine his feelings as he moved from one spiritual place to another. Thank you for the documentary...please do keep producing them.

I'm not good at apologetics, but I would love to see Taylor Marshall debate this guy on how wonderful Luther was. He even added the word Alone to faith until even his own supporters took exception.

A masterwork, Mr. Steves. The depth and breadth of your commentary illustrates and motivates the arc of human civilization. You are so far beyond being just a great tour guide pointing out the sights.
  • @ralphstephan353
Rick Steves has hit his high mark with this production. Outstanding!
  • @JWC-iw9um
Rick - this is one of your better documentaries. Thank you. But today I still see rich churches and the poor and homeless on their doorsteps. The Churches do not have any authority to be rich and what they hold should be shared out among those in most need.

An enlightening presentation to the history of Martin Luther with lessons to be learned regarding suppression of rational, logical understanding and open debate of current global events that we are experiencing today.
  • @alanhill4338
I laughed "that societies earn freedom as they evolved". That is the very opposite of what I see happening today. The story of Luther trying to end avarice and corruption is a noble cause. He would be turning in his grave if he were aware of the corruption that now envelops every walk of life today. How far we have fallen.
  • @LorelLa22
Thank you for this enriching documentary! Having grown up as a Methodist, the hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God has inspired our congregations many times! 🙏🎶🎹

I'm now 80, born in Amsterdam but moved USA by 12. Have a BA in History. Rick, this documentary blows me away, with such warring contrasting dogmas explaining the border lines today, This illustrative guiding on spot helps empower both my empathy and anger at 'religious' fanaticism as a justification for a brutality no other animal on earth would even consider. I think doing a video on Jewish history in Europe would be helpful right now.
