In his 1896 short story The Sea Raiders, HG Wells describes a world where sentient octopuses and squid patrol the coast of Devon, England, feasting on human flesh. It’s one of the sci-fi master’s sillier stories. After all, how scary can a sea-based villain made of squishy stuff be?

  • Octopuses are incredibly intelligent, and several aquariums have had fish go missing only to discover that an octopus had escaped, eaten it and then crawled back into it's tank so as to play innocent

I live hundreds of miles from the ocean, but now I feel as though an octopus is watching me, so thanks for that.

When I was a kid I used to earn spending money working on and repairing fishing nets. I'd spread them out on a floating dock and work away. I could only manage the work when the nets were wet. An octopus would come up every day and visit me. I would put bits of shrimp in my pockets and he'd search them out and remove them. He would take off my hat, look it over and put it back, usually turned the wrong way. His actions and movements never scared me. I was always impressed with how he'd watch me and appeard to be very curious. He would span an area that was about 6 feet wide and would occupy the area of the floating dock that was always about a foot or under water. We were friends for one summer and after that, I never saw him (or her?) again.

Octopuses can be really friendly to humans. People who keep them as per have reported them getting out of the tank to defend against burglars and playing with other household pets.

The freakishly thing I've seen a octopus do is open a jar from the inside
  • @Ohno987
Most octopuses are relatively small non aggressive creatures. Years ago I was at the aquarium in Newport Oregon. They had a large octopus in an enclosure with an open top and visitors were allowed to put their hand in the water. If the octopus felt like it, it would wrap the end of a tentacle around you finger to feel it. Being curious creatures that happened a lot. No one was ever bitten or hurt by the octopus.
