I can't believe with all the amazing Races you've done, and the awesome places you've run, the negative, abusive, comments from people are what you remember? When I see you on the Running Channel, all I think about is ULTRA's, "ULTRA JAMES", the guy that never stops! Man, leave those trolls in the dust, Park Run, 10K, HM, Marathon, ULTRA just keep going!👍👍👍👍

I never ran in my life, no exercise for over 10 years. I just turned 42 and overweight. One day I just decided to get a Garmin and put 5K goal in 9 weeks. I couldn't run for 2 minutes in week 1 and 9 weeks later, I am running 5K this Sunday. (I am ~80% comfortable I can complete the run)

I can concur that running slower more often worked for me as I managed a pb on a 10k a couple of weekends ago. No Garmin, just watching The Running Channel. Thanks guys!
  • Bro do not listen to people shouting shit at you. I guarantee they will not have the discipline or resolve to get out the door in some running shoes, they are putting you down to make their lack of effort in life feel more comfortable to live with. That sir is rocket fuel!!!

I recently completed my Garmin 5k 13-week plan (running 3 days a week)... my PR was 28.37 now it's 25.21, yes it's a huge improvement. After watching this video, now I'm going for 10k ;-).
  • Hey James, love your energy and positivity in all of the videos from this channel. I can really relate with your message about running alone and at night, to avoid feeling self conscious. I've always had a thicker build and I've struggled with that mentality myself sometimes. I love that you're in a place where you can share that with others. You're a bright shining star on this channel. I hope you get some rest when the little one can stay asleep. Cheers mate! You're awesome!

I used Garmin's suggested workouts almost exclusively for my half marathon training (my first half ever) and I really loved it. It's great to wake up in the morning and check my watch to see what I'm going to run. Plus, since it knows half marathon training better than I do, it suggested sessions that I wouldn't have thought to do. A nice balance of structure with some wiggle room if you can't make a run day or you get sick, etc. Hope you get that PB James! I'm crossing my fingers for a sub-50. 😄

I’d highly recommend switching Daily Suggestions to heart rate rather than pace! I find it helps me go by effort and gives some grace when hills make it tough to stick to a prescribed pace while also keeping my effort easy

Doing a lot of Zone 2 training plus some variety with threshold and intervals over the last 3 months (a lot suggested by my watch) is what got me to a sub 45min 10k pb and a sub 20min 5k pb 2 weeks ago. I always stick to the heart rate based training rather than pace

Really loving your content! I just started running a month ago for the first time ever and loving it. I enjoy how down to earth you all are and manage to make the content and running community so approachable for people like me!
  • @djclass005
I love the running channel for your inclusive message!! All types, all speeds, you are all runners and should be proud! I’m sure you motivate many people who feel the same as you did(do)! Love the content!

Yes! I love this. my Garmin suggested runs allowed me to run for an hour straight for the first time ever. I never before thought I could do it, but since my watch suggested it, I tried. :) I also love the kind of surprise aspect of it and not having to think about what I wanna do, then change my mind, decide not to do it, decide oh yes I do want to run, but do some other distance or time etc.

If people ever shout at you again just think the thought " i am on the road putting in the miles and hard work , what are they doing?" 😎 Great job !

Don't focus on the negatives or crappy things people said, focus on what you are achieving. Yes for you personally, but also for others. I started running 5 weeks ago and ran my first official 5k race last week. No small part is seeing you put the time in and showing me that the path is there I just need to walk it (or run it as it may be). When thinking about what people yelled at you when you started, remember you have far more people who want to yell encouragements for you instead.

I let Garmin coach me from 1st Jan this year, for my local (Cardiff) half marathon. Didn't go to plan - aiming for 2 and finished in 2:08 - but really enjoyed using it.
  • @MHeymann
James makes excellent videos! Thank you! 😀
  • @alexgregory8453
I followed my Garmin training plan to run my first half marathon (ended up being 25k). Really enjoyed it. My watch took the decision out of my hands. I just needed to put my shoes on and do what it said.
  • @kjpr5641
Great video can't wait to see what happens in your 10k. Best of luck James!
  • @designcode
Used this feature and made my half marathon training based on Garmin daily suggestion. Scored my PB of an 1:41 in May. It worked so well for me that I used it for my full marathon training. It's on 15th October, fingers crossed :)
