#RLBurnside - Live 1984
From "R. L. Burnside with Johnny Woods (Live 1984, 1986)" DVD

R. L. Burnside (November 23, 1926 – September 1, 2005) was an American #blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. He played music for much of his life but received little recognition before the early 1990s. In the latter half of that decade, Burnside recorded and toured with Jon Spencer, garnering crossover appeal and introducing his music to a new fan base in the punk and garage rock scenes.

I was lucky enough to have seen R.L. live back in 1997 in a bar in Oxford Ms. He had a four piece electric band and brought the house down. The word on the street was when Mr Burnside was in town it was not to be missed and that was the truth!

That vocal inflection he uses at the end of a phrase, the shuffle, the phrasing. It’s all pure gold. RL Burnside should have a national holiday in his name.

One of the most underrated blues musicians ever. A true legend
  • Man is a resourceful being.. A guitar... a set of lungs and a pair of vocal cords.. producing an entire orchestra of sound.. You'd think there were drums..and fiddles but no.. it's all one man two hands and his voice.. Amazing... Talent to the bone.. Thanks for posting... The Beat of Life !
  • The most underrated smile, you could tell he loves what he's doing!
  • He was born like this. Blessed. I'm glad and honored crossing on the same bridge between centuries as this fellow. Great musician.

The beauty of r.l. Burnside was his genuine indifference to fame and money, he had little to no interest in it. He was a bluesman in its purest form. His rhythm style sets the bar for all who try to imitate him. He was a true master of his craft, well seaso ned, this man truly lived the blues and it was obvious in his music. I'm still mesmerized by his playing . I often imitate his finger style rhythms. It just don't get any more blues than r.l. burnside.
  • I love this man so much. Just laughing, singing and playing. Having good time. That smile is so infectios. Thank you, Mr R.L. Burnside. Showing that it's alright to play the guitar with your fingers. R.i.P. Mr R.L. Burnside.

  • Pure music in its purest form. Gorgeous rythm and a voice that cries out dispair. A simple guitar and a big talent make the difference.
