I was in Sri Lanka in February and visited the memorial for the victims of the tsunami and saw some of the buildings that had just been left deserted. Being there made me feel sad now watching this has brought back all the sadness I felt when I was there. Our tour guide told us hundreds of people rushed out to catch the fish that had been stranded when the water went out and no one knew why until it was loo late

Most people world wide knew the word tsunami, they just didn't know what it exactly looked like. I believe movies is what made most people not recognize this as a real threat, as in movies (which most people watch and love) tsunamis are 100 meters high and come in with/in One swipe. These waves looked normal from a distance, and that was expected. You are right that its likely most if not all had no idea of precautions, because had they all acted as if a tsunami was coming, they would have expected a 100 meter wall of water coming. Most either had no idea what a tsunami looked like or were misinformed about it.

In school they taught me that you should run away from the shore when the water recedes severely and randomly. And I dont even live near a fucking ocean!

"This is strange. I don't know what's going on. It looks dangerous. Let's just stand here and watch. No, let's get even closer..."
