Inside Rural Russia: When Military and Patriotism Are Your Life | Town of Glory | ENDEVR Documentary

Watch 'The Oligarch's Wife - Married to a Hunted Russian Billionaire' here:    • Married to a Hunted Russian Billionai...

A heroic Soviet past and a destitute post-industrial present make the provincial town of Yenya susceptible to the Kremlin's aggressive anti-Western propaganda leading to the militarization of society from kindergarten to pension age. With few exceptions, Yelnyans raise their children to become good patriots. They don’t mind the eerie, all-encompassing militarization of society.

Filmed over the course of three years, this film introduces Western viewers to the small and prototypical provincial Russian town of Yelnya where people admire Vladimir Putin for making Russia great again. Yelnya has remained economically marginalized ever since the Soviet Union collapsed. But people have regained pride. They believe that President Putin is bringing back glory and power to the Russian nation. Not many object to the constant propaganda claims that fascism is threatening once again from the US and Europe and that Russia must stand ready to defend itself.

Could have been filmed 30 years ago, and you would hardly see the difference.

I really like how you've unfolded the story in this video. The old lady cries talking today about her experience of the war which took place 80 years ago, and says "let the youngsters live", and then a scene with the modern children, being conditioned from the very young age to accept the war as normal. This is so dark and scary.

"Why did they die?" [in tears] "They died for a different future." This was a triumph. It was raw, unsettling, and insightful in a way that few documentaries could ever hope to achieve. A true triumph.

I lived in the CCCP / Russia and Ukraine - 30 years ago and that was exactly how it was then. This young lady does not say much on her own - and she hesitates as her mother tells her what to say. I am afraid of Stage Mother Syndrome. Notice her face when her mom said she will join the Army.

What he said after taking the shots of Vodka was a very powerful statement. I feel for the man digging up lost bodies. GOD be with him.

I truly feel terrible for Sergey. He seems like a genuine soul who’s fighting to make it when he shouldn’t have to. I truly hope he is well after what was said.

I normally respond to YT videos with a snarky comment, not this time. This is excellent. Best documentary I've seen in years.

I live in Turkey, and Sergei's last words shattered me into pieces. Different places same pains
  • That poor girl Masha, can clearly tell she's conflicted between what her mother wants her to believe and what she actually believes.

Мировая премьера документального фильма "Двадцать дней в Мариуполе" состоялась на кинофестивале Sundance, где фильм получил приз зрителей. Потом были показы и награды еще на 6 фестивалях.

His letter arrived after he was buried. Damn, what a terrible situation to be in as a parent.

One of the best documentaries I have ever seen. They were some scenes I wanted to frame and put on my wall. The subject was very interesting. Thank you so much for your work!

You can travel anywhere you want and probably you'll see common touristic areas with other tourists. But what is impossible is going and talking with locals who lives in a small town. Exploring what they are doing and how they live. At this documentary we can experience this and this is indescribable feeling. Thanks a lot

The last 7 minutes are so sad and terrifying. I really feel for this man. "I cry because i know they died for a different future" thats cold.

Thank you for a sensitive and powerful documentary. I am a trauma therapist and feel deeply moved by Masha and her situation. I wish her well and hope that she finds emotional freedom and peace.
  • This is the definition of living in the past. Yes, you should honor the fallen. But Russians seem to have forgotten that these soldiers died so that others may live. If you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. If you obsess over tragedy and war, it will always follow you
