Blake Fielder-Civil: I Can't Keep Shouldering The Blame For Amy's Death | Good Morning Britain

Published 2023-09-14
On what would have been Amy Winehouse’s 40th birthday, we are joined exclusively by her ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. Married between May 2007 to August 2009, Amy and Blake enjoyed an intense and often tumultuous relationship across 7 years. One of their breakups led Amy to write one of the most iconic albums of all time, 'Back to Black', which she said was about the state of her relationship with Blake at the time. Winning her 5 Grammys, Amy dedicated her win to her 'Blake incarcerated' and said she'd never felt the way she felt about Blake, with anyone else in her life. This morning, Blake will reveal why he's no longer prepared to be cast as the villain, why others need to take responsibility for Amy's drug use/death, why he has to deal with countless death threats and why he doesn’t think a reconciliation with Amy’s father Mitch would work. Amy died in July 2011 from alcohol poisoning, with Blake in jail at the time. Upon hearing the news from prison guards, Blake collapsed and was put on suicide watch. Blake says he thinks about Amy all of the time and is often left jarred if he ever sees her on TV and on what would have been her 40th birthday, says he'll love her forever. A biopic on Amy, directed by Hollywood director Sam Taylor-Johnson, has also recently wrapped, with its release scheduled for early 2024. Titled 'Back to Black', the movie will delve into Amy's rise to stardom, iconic music as well as her marriage to Blake. Playing Blake will be Jack O'Connell, who Blake will say travelled to Leeds to meet with him before filming started.

This is the most healed I've seen him. We all deserve grace to make positive changes. There are moments you can just tell her still loves her in his eyes and that's the kind of love she deserved. Someone who will never stop talking about her. She is a beautiful, gentle spirt in the wind and may God shine His light on her soul for eternity. RIP Amy, Happy Birthday lovely girl.

I always disliked him for introducing her to heroin. But they were both in it together. Amy had serious mental health issues and was a destructive force in her own right - as well as being a musical genius. Added to the fact that there were plenty of other people who brought about her downfall who haven’t taken responsibility. He is well spoken, eloquent & appears as though he has truly reflected. I wish him strength on his recovery & a measure of peace. And it’s just sad we don’t have Amy here any longer.

He was a drug addict too. He's lucky to still be alive himself. No blame. Two young people doing dangerous drugs and drinking to excess. She died. It's tragic. He isn't to blame.

This guy definitely is taking accountability and I admire his honesty. Sad story

Addiction issues and tendencies nearly always stem from an abusive or disfunctional childhood. So Blake should definitely not take the blame. It's easy for her family to scapegoat him.

i used to hate him but he's right. he cant shoulder all the blame. he's a victim too (of drugs) and he suffers too, and amy was already troubled before she met him. i'm not mad at him

i'm 60 and have struggled with addiction my whole life so get where blake is coming from.i honestly think that the media and her fame hungry father played a much bigger part in amy's death! Her records and voice are eternal!I hope she is resting in peace wherever she is now!

I'm feeling emotional intelligence coming from this man. I see someone who is humble, thoughtful and self-reflective. I don't know if he's going to therapy but it seems like it. Amy really loved him and I can see why. His face and eyes smiled in the beginning when talking about her. Beautiful and real love. I bet she finds his way to him in the spirit world somehow, not to be creepy hehe. Much love Blake, you deserve to heal.
  • I don’t think anyone could have saved Amy from being self destructive. Lots of people tried, and sadly, it couldn’t be done.

Suzanne Reid is so rude! She never once asked how he was was in his recovery. She spoke to him like he was a bold school child. It’s not his fault, they were both addicts, it has to start somewhere. Just cos Amy was famous doesn’t make her right and him wrong. What’s a strange way to treat him after all this time!! Hope she’ll be happy lookin back on this. Go back to sticking up for poor little Haz and Maz.
  • As much as I have hated him for years, he seems to have grown and evolved and learned from his mistakes. I can respect that. Rip Amy baby. 😔 we all miss u so much.

Im a huge Amy fan and I think its nice to see Blake clean and looking well. I dont at all think he should be blamed for Amy's death. The facts are that Amy was an addict before she met Blake: her first addiction was alcohol. At the time she moved to Camden and released Frank, heroin was becoming popular on the scene. Blake was into coke at that time and had friends who did heroin, but Amy was more into alcohol and weed. So no, Blake didnt turn her into a junkie. She said no to hard drugs when she first met him. She made the decision on her own after B2B was released and her mental health declined from the pressure of fame. Ultimately, Amy died from alcohol. I would understand maybe hating Blake if she died from heroin, but the vice that her dad said she didnt need to go to rehab for, is what killed her and it had nothing to do with Blake.

I read Amy's mother's book and in the book she talks about how Blake tried helping her get better with treatment. I don't think it's all entirely his fault.

This is the first time I've ever watched an interview by Blake and actually believed him and felt like he was coming off somewhat genuine. Hope he continues to fight for his sobriety.

I don’t blame Blake. He does look better than he has in years. He and Amy both had their issues when when they found each other. It was just a perfect storm. She loved this man though, with all her heart and soul. Even after she had moved on and gotten together with Reg, I think Blake was always in her heart, the greatest love of her life. They were so very young.
  • He clearly loved her and she loved him. The relationship may not have been idealic but its time to give this guy a pass. Her mental health, celebrity status and own addictive personality were not under his control.
  • He’s 100% right he is one of two people who have taken accountability about what they did wrong when it came to Amy. Him and Tyler James. Meanwhile everyone else either blames Amy, herself or everyone else around her. The narrative that he was the ultimate villain needs to end. We all know who the real villain was… her dad. FROM THE START

What a lot of people fail to realise was that Amy was a very strong-willed soul. She wasn't as weak as what people thought - no one made her do anything that Amy didn't want to do. Yes, Blake did introduce Amy to heroin but she was already smoking cannabis and drinking alcohol years before they met, so she'd already had history with substances and had a history of mental health issues with eating disorders and self harm from being a teenager. She was very vulnerable, but I wouldn't say she was fragile - there's a difference. She just loved Blake to death and wanted to always be on the same level as him. She put him first all the time and never really focused on herself sadly. Happy 40th, Amy - we love and miss you every single day xx

Blake was not the cause of Amy's demise. As a child she loved her dad deeply, and they had a very strong bond, especially musically. Then he left. She developed Borderline Personality Disorder which is often linked to a trauma in childhood. You can tell by her behaviour she was desperately trying to fill a painful void for which Blake was never responsible. She would have had turbulent relationships with whoever she had met, and likely to turn to substances to numb the depression. She died from alcohol poisoning, not drugs, after she and Blake had been separated for some time. All of this turbulence and loss is reflected in her music, her beautiful soulful voice. Her father has never acknowledged any responsibility or introspection in his part.
