Ben Hodges, a former US Army Commander in Europe, told DW that the Ukrainian attack on Russian soil is in line with Western policy. In an in-depth interview with Ines Pohl, DW's Washington Bureau Chief, he said: "Ukraine has the right to defend itself, which includes eliminating areas, sanctuaries from which Russia is attacking Ukrainian towns and villages and killing innocent Ukrainian citizens. (...) Ukraine has no interest in conquering Russian territory, but this will help force the Russians to recalculate what they're doing."

Asked about possible German tanks on Russian soil, he said: "I mean, I understand the point or the perceived dilemma, and this is the kind of thing that the Russians and the Kremlin will use. They will point to this. So this is the time for the German government, for the Bundestag, to be calm and cool and recognize that this is Ukraine defending itself against Russia's attack."

Asked about the support for Ukraine from a possible Harris White House, he said: "Kamala's vice presidential pick, Governor Walsh, is a Ukraine hawk. So my sense is that it will at least remain steady, if not get better. And, of course, it always depends on Congress and the makeup of Congress as well."

Talking about the election outcome, he said: "So, yeah, I think that's probably the best thing I could say is a lot is going to happen between now and November the fifth. And I always believe that positive leadership versus division ultimately always wins."

The West doesn't want Ukraine to use these donated weapons to target Russia from Ukraine. So Ukraine improvised and use these weapons in Russia to target Russia.

WTF - russia uses NK equipment so who cares on what UA uses

I respect General Ben Hodge's commentary on military issues
  • General Hodges, I applaud you. In the noise of social media discussions on the war in Ukraine, you remain a clear and informative voice.
  • @RudolphoAqui
I would think the German chancellor’s worst nightmare should be Russian tanks rolling into Germany

General Hodges will be remembered for many years - veteran, soldier, general, expert, such a gentleman and articulate speaker, pleasure to listen to and always makes sense. Respect ✊
  • As a EU citizen I am thankful for Ukraine to be defending us from the ruzzian hordes. I find it asinine to restrict them from where to use the weapons they are given. I also find Olaf Chamberlain extremely risky, as he is constantly manipulated by ruzzia, not that far from Gerhard Schröder.
  • Thank you General Hodges for stepping up once again to help your country by educating them.

My respect to your position on Ukraine and American democracy, General!
  • Well done General. Great to hear you are putting the case for Ukraine where it’s needed in the USA.
  • Giving Ukraine everything it needs to win this war and Ukrainian integration into the EU and NATO is the west’s best self defense.
  • General Hodges you are a true American and a Patriot. America needs more of you. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦
  • They should implement that policy in the US. You can buy/possess weapons but not use them. Great! Try.
  • @SS-yt2sq
Gen. Hodges has been calling out the pathetic US administration policy from the start.
  • Cry me a river r ussia, you started this so deal with the consequences.
