A Day In The Life With Sony WF-1000XM5 Headphones

WORK:
Transparency sounds a bit robotic
You can connect to two devices at once, but not with LDAC
My ears get hot after a bit
Comfortable while wearing though - super lightweight and the softest foam
They call this vegan leatherette which is a hilarious marketing term for synthetic fake leather, but regardless, its comfortable
Fantastic call quality

RELAX:
Still cannot play music via wired USBC playback
You can use them with the cable included, even when the headphones are off. If you turn them on, you get ANC and perhaps a slightly different sound profile, but it was hard to tell
App is outdated
Controls are all on the right ear, so it is easy to remember everything - very intuitive
MIC TEST IN WINDY/LOUD ENVIRONMENT
NFC
Google FastPair
No-plastic packaging

WORKOUT:
No water resistance rating, so I would rather not run with them in the rain
Ear cups snap in and are pretty easy to replace and new ones are about $20, so this is good!
They stayed on my head when lifting like benching and squatting - good
They stayed on my head when running - level 2 = good
They stayed on my head while doing burpees - level 3 = good
Ears might get hot - if you are sweaty, they will not stay on as well. I’m not a heavy sweater
Plenty loud with strong bass capabilities
Great simple gestures on ear cups make switching songs easy, but if running, it takes some getting used to
Sweaty hands can be problematic

TRAVEL/COMMUTE:
No folding
The double and triple press options for the ANC button only have one option (spotify)
Battery seems to last forever
Super powerful ANC blocks out everything
Stylish design adds a nice flare in comparison to the fairly bland XM4s
Cup hand to hear surroundings temporarily is so convenient

why do headphone reviews require shots where you walk around looking side to side like you're about to commit a crime

  • few months on still loving these. Work, exersising, traveling all great. Holding up great and continue to be even on my big ear big head super comfortable for long listenig.
  • Really happy that you showed it's able to have a wired connection/there's a port for a jack. One of the main things I was hoping it had

Good balanced review. Agree with your conclusions. Thanks for discussing the better clamping force on these compared to Bose 700.

these headphones are terrific for the ederly who are losing their hearing but want to watch television programming or the baseball game without the rumble and rattle of others in any shared space. As you age surrounding noise is a huge barrier to hearing. Great review.
  • Been using the XM5s for about a week now. They have been great overall, but I find that in some instances the automatic ANC feature struggles to give enough noise-cancelling for my environment.

I prefer the manual optimising feature of the previous models. Just my opinion.

Watching again in stir up interest in hopes of holiday deals coming up. I really wish Purple made ear cups with the grid like their mattresses to help with sealing over uneven surfaces like glasses and hats, and simultaneously providing heat dissipation.
  • Thanks ❤️. I was in confusion seeing the negative reviews in Amazon. But this video summarizes all I needed to know. Thanks again.
  • I've had these for 7 months now. I bought these, and the best Bose and Beats to test them at home for which one was the best sound and noise cancelling. My son and I did a blind test on both of us. We both chose these for both sound quality and noise cancelling, wasn't even close. I used them for a 20 hour flight to Thailand and they were a life saver. Super comfortable. Battery lasted the entire trip. Had a crying baby three seats away, couldn't hear the baby at all when playing music at a normal level. Putting my hand over the right ear allowed me to communicate with the flight attendant. The ONLY negative I have experienced, and it may just be not knowing how to use them correctly, is that when I have them setup to turn off noise cancelling when I put my hand over the right ear they will also turn off noise cancelling when I yawn. That's annoying because I then have to turn the noise cancelling back on. Again, that might be me not knowing how to set them up correctly. I need to do some reading on that. Overall, they have awesome sound and great noise cancelling, and last a long time. Highly recommend.

This is the best review of these headphones on YouTube and i’ve watched every one of them.

Extensive and insightful Mike, keep up the good work brother.

Great review, Thanks! Some are quick to say what’s sauce for the goose but when the ear is on the other foot, sometimes the secret sauce can be lost. Not this time though; It is all super good.
  • I tried the XM5 but as soon as the 1 hour mark passes, the clamping force and the shallower earpads really start fatiguing my ears. They sound and look great, but honestly I expected a lot more in terms of comfort because I don't just use headphones for an hour at time. Decided to return them and go for the Bose QC45. They don't sound quite as dynamic but are heaps more comfortable and have comparable ANC. At least, that's my experience with this product.
  • @astoom1
a lot of people commenting on these not being able to fold down to reduce travel size, I'm glad they don't fold! I've always hated hinges in my head phones their usually the first thing to go reducing longevity!!!
  • @KeyurPatel_Q
I tried them in the store along with 700s and I found the fit better with the 700. I guess it all depends on the size of the head. If you have a smaller head, I think 700 is better.
  • @VanCamelCat
What a wonderful review. Thank you for the information and the charming delivery of it 👍
  • I really appreciate your reviews.

I’m having a terrible time with the Bose NC 700 headphones. I’ve already had 3 different pairs sent to me by Bose under warranty.

I’m using as my main smartphone the iPhone 13 Pro. I have 3 pairs of Bose QC 35 II and all of them work PERFECTLY on phone calls - everyone hears me GREAT - if I leave myself a VM my voice is loud and clear.

The Bose NC 700 sound like my voice is muffled and distorted - as if there is something covering the mic’s and blocking my voice. I’ve reset them multiple times - NOTHING helps. I have even tried them on several different smartphones. The iPhone 6, iPhone SE 2nd generation and the iPhone 13 Pro - of course the iPhone 6 is running an older iOS version of 12.X. My iPhone SE 2nd generation and 13 Pro have been tried with both iOS 15 all revs and now iOS 16. The NC 700 is muffled and distorted on ALL of the iPhones. I even tried them on my BlackBerry KEY 2 and DTEK 60 - the exact same problem with both BlackBerry Android smartphones and the iPhones. I’ve NEVER had any trouble with Bluetooth headphones before with any brand let alone Bose. They sound GREAT with music but my voice is all muffled and distorted as if the mic’s are being blocked by something.

As I stated, all 3 pairs of my Bose QC 35 II work perfectly for voice calls. I also use AirPod PROS, Bose QC earbuds, Beats Fitpro buds - they all work GREAT for my voice on phone calls and voice recordings as well.

The only thing that makes any sense to me, is that the Bose NC 700 want to pair with the LE (low energy) setting in the Bose audio app. Even if I pair them on the iPhone or Android smartphones directly in the Bluetooth setting without the Bose music app - I get the same terrible voice call results.

I would really appreciate any input and advice you may have for me.

    Warm regards,
    Joel
