Looks like my ex girlfriend in the morning

It really does look like a person in a bird suit, impressive animal but quite fearsome too. Great name they gave them, it's well deserved of the creatures from mythology

A magnificent bird and a national treasure. The Harpy eagle is a protected species here in Guyana, South America(bordering Brazil).

Once the harpy appeared here in my neighborhood and terrorized the neighborhood. The birds went into a frenzy trying to lure the harpy away from their nests or something. But the craziest thing is that people went to the street to see it as if it really was a mystical creature, it was huge and it flew very elegantly. This is a very rare sight to see in a big city like São Paulo But I think my proximity to the Atlantic Forest gave me this gift in the form of a sighting.

I'll be honest, I had no Idea this bird existed. I am impressed and scared 😳
  • Harpy eagles have sort of become a "symbol" of our household. They are beautiful and unique, in that they have only one chick at a time, and the chicks will often return to their parents throughout their life just to see the parents. Since we were only able to have one child, it is kind of a cool story for our daughter and us. We tell her she has to be like a harpy eagle when she is older and never forget to visit us. :) We have a picture of a harpy eagle in our living room as well.

I'm from Acre, Brazil. My grandfather was once a riverside dweller and once collected rubber tree sap (latex), his father said that when he was a boy he heard about a case involving a harpy and a baby, the parents left and left the children, there were older children and babies. The harpy took the baby and took it away, when the parents returned, the father killed the harpy. My grandfather said that the child's father already suspected that this could happen because she was flying close to the place and this seemed strange for her habits. I thought it might just be a story from my grandfather, until I saw one in person and found out what kind of prey it hunts. (Forgive me if the story is not clear, my English is not good and I used Google Translate for most of the text)
  • Interesting that in Greek mythology Harpies lived in Crete. They are described as being human sized. Crete used to have a species of Giant Eagle in prehistoric times. Imagine what the first people to settle Crete thought when they first saw these birds. Or when they were first attacked by them!

They hit so hard in their attacks, they make an atibile thump that can be heard some distance away. I had the privilege of watching a nesting pair in Panama in 1981 while on TDY in the Army for jungle expert training at Ft Stewart.

I came across 2 Harpie's about 5 years ago , not knowing what they were. I just seen 2 large birds with a huge nest. At first I was scarred. To shake off the fear I just spoke to them saying ," you stay there I am going down that way and we leave each other alone." They watched me walk away.

I live in Brazil, in Amazon state, this is the most beautiful creature I've ever seen in my life, but even here, its hard to see them for they live in the deep of amazon rainforest and make their nest in the tallest trees of the jungle.
  • I've seen a few Youtube documentaries about the Harpy Eagle and they've always mentioned its amazing size but also neglected to show comparisons to humans, animals, or other such things. Thank you for 6:55 They are indeed massive!
  • @YBRebel
harpy eagles are literally just Irish people reincarnated as a bird. That is all I have gotten from this video.

I was fortunate enough to see a Harpy Eagle in Madidi National Park in Bolivia back in 2005. I've seen tons of Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, and other large raptors, including Andean Condors and King Vultures. While it's fantastic to see all of these, there's nothing like seeing a Harpy. Even though it's a bird, they're still intimidating as it flew not far from us. It was the experience of a lifetime.
  • That is terrifying 😳 Could you imagine that flying at you in a dark forest in the middle of the night?? 😬
  • Have never heard of this bird before. Wonderful explanation of this very large bird and wonderful pictures. So enjoyable!! Thank you!!!!
