Kenya is deploying a force of 1,000 police officers to Haiti to fight criminal gangs that have taken control of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince.

However, Kenya is not the first foreign intervention in Haiti; Brazil led a mission from 2004 to 2016, with a mixed outcome.

But can Kenya succeed where others have failed? And what awaits them?

The BBC News Africa's Ian Wafula and BBC News Brasil's Mariana Sanches explain.

I’m Congolese who loves Kenya a lot but Kenyan President should focus on Kenya right now and not focus on send troops in every country to bring peace, Kenya still has many things to deal with. I like Ruto but he needs to hold his horses.

Yet here in Kenya armed bandits managed to exchange fire with a contingent of well trained officers for 7hrs and none of the bandits were arrested nor killed by a single billet from the police.

Ruto has a vision to elevate Kenya's stature on the world stage...he is trying to position his country as a continental and global impact player. He needs to watch his pace though, he'll soon bite off more than he can chew

The current kenyan president can auction off his own mother for money without scruples . What is 1000 chaps for 14 billion shillings?
  • This video doesnt have subtitles. I am disappointed such a huge media house is openly against accesibility to PWD.

Kenya is burdened enough with poverty and insecurities. The blind can not assist a blind person to walk.

I am Brazilian. I know some of the soldiers and even officers who served there. They DID pacified the country where "gang violence" does not make justice to the problem. There were armed factions, with military grade gear. Rapes were more than common, electric energy was a luxury item. Say what you want about our county, but they did it's job in Haiti. However, they cannot save Haiti from a failing government. And to make matters worse, soulless political militant who live of others misery started to fabricate narratives, because of many soldiers and high ranking officers were part of the former government. Is that Ms. Sanches' angle? I don't know. And due to some unbelievable stances BBC are taking lately. Even getting their information from terrorists, I'd not be surprised.

Who dont know that president William ruto is a business person?
  • Kenya police is for internal operations only. External operations like Haiti is illegal ..

The only reason i dispute sending Kenyan police to Haiti, is not because of competence, Kenya police are competent. our general service unit are adequately trained. I don't think Haiti is such a big thing. The problem of Haiti is as 'big and small as people' who are benefiting from the current state. In Kenya we call them cartels. They won't give in easily. The willingness of Haitians to decide they have had enough is what will cause the change they need. Our men cannot change their hearts. Guns cannot. Haiti needs to decide what they want going forward. This is their call. For that reason High Court Kanyagia hapo.

So Ruto is sending our sons to go and die there for his own gain , unbelievable 😢
  • @GuaroLlanero
The proposed operation for tackling gang violence in Haiti is very different from a peacekeeping mission. Even though Kenya has experience in the latter, it is unlikely that its police will do a good job this time

"You can checkout any time you like, BUT YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE!" That line from Hotel California will take on new meaning to Kenyans if you go ahead with this mission.

The Kenyan president needs to mind his own business, those officers are going to come up missing. The people of Haiti will fix the problems themselves.
