In this video I let you know why I had to return my brand new GoPro Hero 11 and what you need to look for on your GoPro to be sure you don't have the same issue.

I recently purchased my Hero 11 due to the 10bit color feature and began immediately testing it out against the Hero 10. I was pleasantly surprised by the increased dynamic range of the Hero 11 versus the 10. However, I noticed something that certainly didn't look normal. What I noticed was a white vertical lens streak that spanned the entire height of the image. Whether it was photos or video the streak was there. After a little research and cleaning just to be sure it wasn't simply a smudge on the front glass element I determined it was time to put a call in to GoPro. Thankfully the GoPro customer service tech, through chat messaging, was very nice and answered all my questions. Ultimately we came to the conclusion that the Hero 11 needed to be returned. In this video I explain more and show examples.

Also, what settings are you using for your A7 sii to get the colors to match up with the Gopro? Good job by the way.
  • I just got mine today and came across this video. I upgraded from the 9 and immediately tested to see if there was a sun flare issue on my 11 as well and there was. I compared it with the 9 and that one did not have any issues. What a shame.
  • Hi, after watching your video, I picked my GoPro Hero 11 up and pointed it at the sun to see if got the same result, I guess I must be one of the lucky ones, my camera didn't suffer from the same problem, to be honest I was impressed with the way it handled bright light, the rest of the sky was blue and the colours in my garden were pretty close to the real thing. I hope your replacement camera is a good one.
  • Ok now I'm confused. You're filming with the GoPro 10 and at 4:25 to 4:27 there is vertical streaking in the upper corner of the screen and then you pan away. I bought the GoPro 11 and it streaks like crazy when facing the sun. So it seems the GoPro 10 also has vertical streaking. Is streaking normal for these cameras; should I just accept that these cameras streak facing the sun?
  • I have a HP intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz, 16 GB ram, 64 bit, with all SSD drives and windows 10 and. Now, when I take a GoPro11, 1 minute video of say 5.3k 60fps and load into my video editor (Video Pad) it takes 23 minutes to load so I can edit the video. Crazy Nuts!! Tried other modes, same thing. Got my old GoPro 9 black out and shot 1 minute of similar video but at 2.7k at 60fps. Loaded into my editor fine. Do I send the 11 back and just keep shooting with the 9? Do I need a new processor, Memory, motherboard, SSD drives which means lots more $$ spent? Any input would be appreciated.

Great video, how was the replacement camera?

The problem i have with the 11 is that i can't use the MAX lens MOD and take advantage of the 10bit.

Speaking of cleaning lenses...what are your recommendations for that? I'm using microfiber and they seem to leave a flaky residue. Maybe it's because I wash them and put them in the dryer with fabric softener sheets. I didn't notice it until I used one to try cleaning an ND filter. Do you use distilled water or an alcohol solution for really dirty lenses? Might be a good idea for a short.

Found that problem yesterday reviewing some footage, however I’ve filmed with the 11 at sunset other time and everything was ok, the only difference was that I was using a polarpro ND filter, anyone has the same experience?

Mine go pro 10 turns black when I am filming after a few minutes, and I can't see what I am videotape. It's very frustrating anybody knows if is the settings?
  • Same for me, I returned the media mod they returned to me the refurbish with missing accessories I returned the complete set and gave back the missing the mic foam.

I’m curious about whether it’s the new hydrophobic coating on the lenses which repels water. Naturally, it’s oily substances which are hydrophobic, so if it’s not layered on neatly it might be the cause of the streaking. Could test that by swapping the lens from the 10 to the 11 and vice versa and seeing if the streak also transfers. Just ordered mine, keen to see what it can do! Upgrading from a 5 session 😂
  • I live in Scotland and this confuses me. What is that thing in the sky that is causing the streak?
  • @isimme5370
did you get a replacement Hero11 and are you happy with it?
  • @iNasteable
its alreday winter. Is there any way i can test it now? bought it 2 days ago, how to check if mine is not faulty?
  • I am having problems connecting to wifi to upload my videos to the cloud it is very frustrating

I have this problem on my Insta360 One X and you can see it all over hundreds of other people's YouTube clips whenever the sun comes into the shot. On my first One X it was only on one lens (badly) and I returned it when Insta360 didn't respond to my request for help. On the replacement it's on both lenses but not as bad. I guessed it was grease of some kind inside the lens and of course it's not accessible. Thanks for highlighting the issue in your video, even if it's a different brand.
