Re Ukraine: Many people wondering if Map Men are legitimising the Russian annexation of Crimea at 2:39. We are not. We had intended to make Crimea a different colour, as a way of saying 'look, sticky outy bit that's also currently disputed', but we just forgot to do it. We are sorry. This YouTube account is not, actually, a Kremlin propaganda bot.

As a German I can say: we tried becoming a square twice: The Rest of the world didn‘t like it

This would've been the perfect video to be sponsored by Squarespace.

The "San Marino? San Mari-no", and "the Vatican? The Vatican't" are the best sounds to have ever graced my ears
  • It's so fucking incredible to me that you nail the expression for anger in Paraguay, because contrary of what everyone must asume we won't react in spanish in that situation. Let me explain: the expression "nde" it's in guaraní (the native lenguage of the country still speak till this day alongside spanish) and it's so crazy because if you try to translate it it's literally "You", so you have to have so inside knowlege to know that's also used like the expression "hey! 😡" 3:14

I literally said "Egypt is kinda square" at the beginning of the video and I think I've peaked in life.

Amazing video! My 13yo is totally obsessed by this -- enough so that he's dragged me down the hole. I ended up writing a program to calculate the squareness of countries, and according to my metric Egypt is indeed the winner at 89.5% square, followed by (North) Sudan and Cote D'Ivoire both at just over 83%. Interestingly (to me at least), these seem to be the only countries that score higher than a circle, which scores exactly 2*sqrt(2)-2, or roughly 0.828, on my metric. So rejecting countries for being "too round" may not be valid, at least not if you're interested in finding square-ish countries beyond the top 3.

not going to be long until some cheeky bugger requests this at karaoke
  • I have just re-watched this video, and I find it quite a catchy tune! To the people of Egypt, congratulations on having the squarest borders! Also, nice "Egguatorial Guinea" at 3:29! I didn't notice it until just now! Thanks for the video!

The Japanese sentence reads: "Dear volunteers, can you translate this sentence? Thank you very much! - Map Men"

Finally, the British drawing straight lines all over the map pays off!

I never thought I'd listen to a song on how square countries can be. I love it.

I feel a little disappointed because it didn't include my homeland Taiwan, but truly a masterpiece! Well done!

Let's see Jay do his "one syllable out of sync trick" on this song
