A look at the mechanics, story and innovation of Lionhead Studios' biggest franchise before it shut down.

This game came out when I was 12 and I remember it being so goddamn strange. Turns out that assessment wasn't too far off from the truth.

  • the weirdest thing about the game is how your character's age is tied to his level. so by the end of the game he was a wrinkle-faced, white-haired old man (still built like a wrestler), but everyone else didn't age one bit.

Fun fact: For the "do something evil" Demon door, if you already have a shit ton of evil, he'll be like "holy crap you're the master get in here"

The music of this game crawls into your soul and stays there forever

The most memorable part of Fable was planting an acorn and seeing it grow as time passes.
  • The most memorable part of the original Fable for me was the Speaking Stones quest that wants you to spell out the word HITS, but you are also given the freedom to make it spell out the word SHIT, and spawn a bunch of enemies after it realized what you made them say.
  • "I actually won't be covering the entire franchise in one 4-hour long video" You do you Salt but you know i'd be watching a ten hour video breakdown if you did it

Fable was something greater than the summ of it's part imo. No singular thing in the game was anything overly special (except the music) but it all somehow fit together to form something quite magical. When I think of Fable, I get a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart, it's a very "cozy" game, I still love it.

Whisper calls you “farm boy” while begging for her life because you are childhood friends and that’s what she nicknamed you when you first met. She was trying to invoke the bond you share to spare her life.

fun fact: in the fable 2 loading screen tips there is a tip that says the fable 1 protaganist murdered the guild master and carved "your health is low" on his forhead after the game ending

I played Fable when I was 14. I didn’t notice the poor writing or story issues present. I was in love with the world they created. The score for the game is still one of the greatest I’ve ever listened to and I still play it from time to time while I work.

did anyone else go to twinblades camp and get all the bandits to follow you to raid oakvale? it was how my character processed his trauma

As a dev on this, Fable 2 and Fable 3, thanks for the nice review :). The DLC was certainly not designed before the first game was finished! One thing to remember is that Peter was primarily involved in Black & White & The Movies, the Fable games were designed mainly by Dene Carter who left at the beginning of Fable 3, Peter was more the 'face' of the games as Dene hated publicity (Which is why you don't really know about him!).

The aesthetic of this game is honestly what made it so good, fond memories; haven’t really come across another game with the same aesthetic. It just felt, like playing an old fairytale turned into a game. Weird but, worth it.

honestly still surprised how many character based options fable had back in the day that modern rpgs just don't have, like really why can't i get fat in skyrim when i eat 100s of bread loafs or just emote to a npc with a wave or romance a normal person
  • @GG3695
"Yo sick bandit gear bro. Is that an angry mob behind you?" Funniest line in the whole video
  • @sl1003
The most memorable part of this game was when Whisper departed. Whisper may not have been the best person but I did consider her a friend and when she said she was leaving forever, it hit me real hard as a kid. I never thought of never seeing a friend again and it felt so bittersweet. And I really get it now after graduating from school and losing contact with a couple of friends.
  • @Ialliac
"Try to get your combat multiplier...even higher!" Truly words to remember
  • @T4RHUN
Fable's music is absolutelly orgasmic. Never heard something similar in games since.
  • @dsilvermane_
Fable might have enough plot holes to sink a tanker, but it's still awesome.

"I actually won't be covering the entire franchise in one four-hour long video so we can all breathe a sigh of relief there." As a fan of MauLer's critical analysis, I sigh with disappointment.
