MBARI's Top 10 deep-sea animals

Published 2020-09-09
The deep sea—Earth's largest habitat—is home to a host of magical and mysterious animals. As we help our education and conservation partners at the Monterey Bay Aquarium prepare for the exhibit Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean, launching in 2022, they were curious to know which denizens of the deep are our favorites? With that question in mind, we gathered five of MBARI’s finest deep-sea biologists—Shannon Johnson, Kakani Katija, George Matsumoto, Bruce Robison, and Susan von Thun—and came up with a list of ten favorites. You might be surprised to see what made our list and what makes these creatures so lovable.

For more than three decades, MBARI researchers have been exploring the deep ocean with remotely operated vehicles, discovering fascinating ways that life in the deep sea has evolved to thrive in this dark, cold world. Our ocean is vast and full of things yet unseen. Every time we set out on an expedition, we are amazed by new observations and we are excited to share ten of those discoveries with you!

Separately from all of the cool animals, this video was perfectly paced. No stalling or stretching, every second was interesting. Kudos to whoever edited this.

“they look like a nightmare but they’re really amazing” proceeds to describe why they are, in fact, a nightmare

Two things: 1)- I love the passion these scientists have on describing these animals, it's almost contagious 2)- That heart-shaped red jellyfish looks absolutely astonishing, straight from a sci-fi novel

it's amazing how there are still animals on this planet we've never seen before.

That blood belly comb jelly looks like an intergalactic amusement park ride, or a space queen wearing fancy light jewelry. So incredible!

3:22: "It's bizarre to us because they seem ill suited for survival in our world, but in the deep sea they're perfectly well adapted". Very interesting point! It made wonder about extraterrestrial life.
  • The deep sea is such a mysterious and neat place. The animals found are absolutely crazy. Visually striking and mind boggling adapt for their environment. Absolutely incredible.

Imagine being called the vampire squid and then it's revealed you only eat poop. Poor dude must be embarrassed his secret got found out

"They look like a nightmare but they're really amazing" proceeds to tell us it goes inside other animals and that it lays eggs inside the carcasses

Shocking that you guys only discovered 7% of the ocean, yet these discoveries are all stunning already!

Unfortunately I have to leave this area. I studied Oceanography in college, and did quite well in it - including a sailing exhibition related to underwater mapping, a subject I was engrossed in during my time in school. To live on this coast, first in the Channel Islands, and now here in Monterey Bay was a blessing. I will try to teach my grandson as much as I can about this beautiful planet we live on, and focus as much as possible on Oceanography. The ocean is still such a vast place, and so little explored. Thank you MBARI. I just flat love you guys, and I'll miss this beautiful place.

I just love how passionate everyone is describing these amazing animals. Made my day!

"Bloody belly comb jelly". My favorite animal name from now on.

I grew up in Monterey County where our school frequently visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium. As a kid i just enjoyed going there & learning to appreciate marine life. The research center is really there to help sea creatures.

Such a fabulous, intelligent, enthusiastic group of scientists who truly love what they know/study/do. Wonderful!

The barrel eye fish is hands down the most bonkers adaptation I have ever seen. What insane set of circumstances led to evolving a CLEAR SKULL rather than just eyes pointing up like a halibut or something? I just cannot get over that thing.

Man I really appreciate that there are amazing dedicated people that go out and film this stuff for us.
