“Our commitment to Israel’s security and our commitment to their self-defence is unwavering, and It’s also important to take a step back and remember that we condemn in the strongest terms this reckless and irresponsible attack by the Iranian regime,” Patel told Al Jazeera.
Iran has said its weekend attack was in retaliation for Israel’s strike on its consulate in Damascus, but Patel argued that the extent of Iran’s attack was also a “violation”.
“The United States is still making an assessment on the status of this facility [Iran’s consulate]. I don’t have any update to offer as it relates to that, but again, the sheer number of ballistic missiles and drones that Iran unleashed on Israel is totally irresponsible and reckless.”

Why did Israel,or rather its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, authorise this unprovoked attack, that too on a diplomatic target? Was Israel seeking to widen the scope of the conflict with Hamas and draw in other players into an escalating war? Did it not know that its action on Iran’s embassy would invite a retaliation? Or did it misjudge the strong reaction by Iran?
