There was an old Dr. Who episode about this. The 3rd doctor was called to an experimental dig site where they where drilling down close to the Earth's mantle and there were ... Things down there.

12:55 at this point I don't think the Chinese dug that hole. I think they found it and removed the debris from it because whoever originally dug it filled it in after to hide it

The instant arbitrary imprisonment on a fabricated/vague charge in China really adds to the realism of the story. "Picking quarrels and provoking trouble" is an old favorite of theirs to deal with inconvenient people

When I was a kid one of my favorite things to do was dig holes and every time I headed out to dig a hole my mother told me to be careful or I might dig through to China. I wonder if I dug deep enough I might have met the guy’s in this story from the other end.

Traditionally this should be a Russian background story, but as a Chinese person (and longtime listener) it's really interesting to find a pasta happens in China, even we are the villain here. My family name is also Zhang. XD
