It may work, it may not. Just having fun with it, let the trial and mostly error commence!

These are 4 Digit, 14 Segment Alphanumeric display modules based on the HT16K33.
You can grab similar ones from these places:
- shop.pimoroni.com/products/quad-alphanumeric-displ…
- www.adafruit.com/product/2157
- ebay.us/AVhpZq
- coolcomponents.co.uk/products/grove-0-54-red-quad-…
- Or the wider internet, who knew?!

I am using the Adafruit LED Backpack library but there are lots of other available, or bare code if you have the time - github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_LED_Backpack

It turns out that 'Likes/Dislikes' and 'Shares' actually help the channel so, if you want to, please click the thumbs up or share the video.

I don't have a Patreon or a regular donate thingy, I get by fine. That said, if you are mega rich and fancy buying me a coffee, breadboards or CMOS ICs - paypal.me/DavidWattsYT
or if you fancy donating something I would find useful then feel free to check out my Amazon wishlist (No pressure) - www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/29JZFQUC2NZ8V

I put lots of my favourite products and stuff that helps me make video up on this Amazon page - www.amazon.com/shop/davidwatts It is one of those affiliate things.

If you want to get in contact Twitter is probably the best way @mrdavidjwatts

I remember this guy! Good to see you're doing well.

I bought 5 of those displays on EBay. The LED segments were a greenish blue. You could actually use just one HT16K33 to drive all 8 alphanumeric characters if you have spare 14-segment LEDs, and thus the ESP32 only needs to talk to one I2C address

Nice to see you in action again! I think there is a quick fix for the color difference, as that board is designed to run off 5V. Just move the VCC jumper to the 5V output of the module. Make sure the VI2C line is still connected to 3.3V though, your suspicion was right - it does set the IO line voltage.

Thanks David. Nice to see you. I like the display, too bad about the mixed colours. Take care.

Woo! He's back! Hope things are going well Mr Dave!

Please... use search/replace for things like that ;) I might be a freak that uses a regular expression to change 2 characters on a single line but this certainly would benefit from search/replace

Breadboard with 6 pin columns exists? Oh well, one more item added to the never ending shopping list....
  • Don't have a clue what the content is about, but I like this man!
  • 14 segments displays are quite neat, you just can't display a lot of offensive words on only 7 segments :P
  • @maicod
really wondering why they use 2x2 segments and one half is a different colour :( I think they forgot to sort the panels and the assembled boards with mixed colours got sold cheaper on Ali

Who manufactured that wide protoboard with the faint writing on it? Thanks
  • @gedtoon6451
I got one of these from eBay and I was also surprised that two digits were red and two were orange! There must be a story behind this, do you think they are a manufacturing mistake?
  • @TheDefpom
Those two displays have quite a brightness difference between the two digits..
