How to fix a batten to a wall

Published 2023-04-22
In this video I am fixing a timber batten to a wall, for a handle-less kitchen.
The kitchen designer has specified that all base units and tall units need spacing away from the wall by 50mm, this has been achieved by fixing a 3”X2” wooden batten to the walls. One of the walls is a stud partition wall and the other wall is a dot and dab wall.

Nice work. A rare sight to see someone drill pilot holes ;-)
  • Hi Andy ☺ thanks for your time and efforts mate, this is a good video showing the easy way to fix battens, especially on dot and dab walls, those corefix plug and screws are a game changer , as you well demonstrated, and I will be using them as and when needed. Good to see you again, hope your keeping well, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.

That is a great kitchen fit and thanks for the video
  • I like how you switch back and forth between metric and imperial measurements meaning you get to confuse both sides of the pond 😂 As someone who was born in the 70's I also get the pleasure of doing that to the people I work with 🤣🤣
  • Great video, very enjoyable !!!! Thank you 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇

i do similar to you but i use fischer duopower plugs in the wall (brick) then use some m8x150mm stainless screws like what you would use on a satellite dish, i use a forstner bit to countersink the screws and use washers to get a nice tight fit.
  • Thanks for the video. When you pre-drill the battens, do you drill a clearance hole or do you prefer the screws to bite into both the batten and the stud?

Hi mate what size were these screws that you used ? The 100mm screws that came with them are not long enough if you got the link to screw fix etc will be helpful thank you.

Im looking to add a small wood batten to my plasterboard wall. Reason being is i have a dolby atmos sound bar and the upwards firing speakers are blocked by the bottom of the tv which is immediately above it. But im then looking to fix the soundbar with the brackets onto the wood to extend the soundbar out. How can i keep the wood secure with the weight of the sound bar pulling on it ? I cant think of another way to get the soundbar out from directly underneath the wall mounted tv
  • May not be the way I would have done it but it’s definitely a different way and I will give that way you done a try and see how I get on Just want to ask do you ever watch another video like this on YouTube or do you just make videos like you do but not watch any video on DIY/how to / maintenance I ask as I do proprietary maintenance and even though I have years of experience I still like to watch DIY / how to / maintenance videos Great job on everything

Hi really good advice here could you mount a 55 inch tv on these battens. I want to mount a tv on a pull out type bracket I need the tv to be a bit further away from the wall as the recess is 500 mm and the bracket only come out 400mm. I’ve heRd you can build a sort of plywood and batten mount for tv. I have used the fisher plugs before when mounting on dot and dab with thermolite (new build style house) behind with no issues. I’m a bit nervous to use a batten and plywood. I thought about using direct concrete screw in. Would you have any ideas please 🙏
  • Interesting. I’ve never had to fit battens to the wall like this when fitting kitchens, what’s the purpose of the batten, why not just make the cabinets deeper?
