The cable car that you pedal by hand

Through the mountains of Slovenia, there are manual cable cars: some historic, some more modern. There aren't many left. I was able to try one, and to talk to the person who still maintains it.

Just to be clear, there are a few of these in other places in the world, too. There's at least a couple in North America, one in Germany, and one in Turkey! (Or at least, I think they still exist.) But the video of the Cicka got me to beautiful Slovenia, and the story that I found there was worth the trip.

I like that Tom has an appreciation that telling these stories presents a certain level of risk to the subjects themselves.

I like how Tom is aware of his responsibility to the places he visits. He truly is a traveller and not just a tourist.

"one day, they'll be history. But then, one day, so will everything." That just got deep at the end

I remember just a little while ago that Tom was terrified of roller coasters. And now he's bouncing up and down on a device that is far less safe than any roller coaster I've ever seen!

I'm amazed how Tom manages to have a production team in every country possible.

I noticed a similar lack of records for passenger ropeways and ski lifts in Australia, so I thought it would be easy to make a list of them, past and present. That was 16 years ago and I now have over 500 documented on the website and I discover a few more every year. It was not an easy task.

I'm from Slovenia and it's amazing to see a person like you documenting sights like this.

I like how Tom used the original "udarniško" instead of substituting it with a similar English word! Great job at preserving the culture :)

I spotted Tom walking around in Ljubljana a while back and was wondering what amazing place he could be visiting. Lovely video.

“One day, they’ll be history. But then, one day, so will everything.” Don’t think if I’ve heard such a sentiment said in such a comforting way.
  • Udarnisko is a good word that I will try to remember. Thats the spirit we need more of ! Great work Sir

How the heck is Tom not in the top 5 YouTube channels. Tom and team, if you see this. Even short bite sized videos are so expertly shot. I can't get enough of them.

i'm so happy to hear my language in a Tom Scott video

Tom is becoming braver on each adventure, some time ago he would never bounce so confidently on a sketchy cable car over the abyss.

What a beautiful country! First I had some friends just get back from hiking there and showing me pictures, then the Grand Tour's Eurocrash show just went there with some beautiful video of Lake Bled, now Tom. It's a sign to visit Slovenia.

The last shot has some lovely Wes Anderson-like feel to it. Silently rolling back quickly, half in frame - just perfect.

I can't really believe Tom Scott visited that random cable bridge me and my family saw while travelling 2 years ago. We didn't think much of it.. but we definitely played around a little, it's actually inclined slightly so that it's hard to finish the trip in one direction, but it almost goes hands-free in the other.
