In this UNSPONSORED video I share with you a brief test drive of the current generation FL5 Honda Civic Type R. As a MK7 Golf GTI Clubsport S owner, you can't ignore the Type R as it was the FK2 gen car the GTI took the front wheel drive Nordschleife lap record from and the FK8 took the record back and this FL5 holds the current record today.

Like the Clubsport S, it's held it very high esteem for its dynamics by the motoring press but unlike the GTI, the FK8 and this FL5 version to a degree do shout a bid loudly about their performance. I belieive dynamics should not be the be all and end all for a hot hatch, it needs to do a lot of things very well. In this video which was filmed in less than half an hour, I try and decide if it's a better all rounder hot hatch than a GTI.
This video can be divided into the following sections;
0:00 teasers
0:07 graphics by @haslerdesigns
0:10 what this video is about
1:27 FL5 Civic Type R stats
2:40 exterior tour
4:27 the interior
8:36 under the bonnet
9:28 driving on Millbrook's hill course
13:05 100 mph on Millbrook's high speed bowl
14:50 the verdict

I fail to understand why you want a “hot hatch” capable of 169 mph to look like a car that your Gran takes to Tesco ?? It shouts “I’m a Type R” and so it should well done Honda I say 👏👏👏👏👏

good review ive got the fk2 type r i used to own a mk5 golf r32 and ive driven a mk7 r and s3 so glad i bought the type r

I do think they should cost 10k less. That interior is so much more functional than so many modern cars, I can look past the plastics because the actual important parts are nice quality

Last of the breed ....yes it's expensive but everything is now. Future classic without a doubt
  • I had a D reg fiat uno turbo ie and that had red carpets. God I loved that car. Amazing dials but so fast back in the day. Loved it 😂

I like everything about the FL5 apart from the cup holders in the middle of the back seat. More than plenty of room to make it a 5 seater.

Thanks Andrew, great to see you do this particular beast. Manual box ☑️ No bloody capacitive crap ☑️☑️😁

I had my name down for one of these before they were released, but pulled out as soon as they released the price. 50k is way too much for a CTR. I don’t care how good it is.

Didn’t even put the car in R mode. Obviously didn’t do his homework because he is biased towards German brands. Also what about going into individual mode and customising everything to suit your preferences. In Australia it costs 73000 which is about 38000 English pounds. Sorry to disappoint you but it has no competition as a driver focused car with a beautiful manual transmission. Over engineered handling and balance. Huge Brembo brakes. Some people just have no idea how much engineering went into this car.Better if people who don’t understand what this car is about stick to unreliable European cars with a DSG transmission so they can win the traffic light drag.😂😂

Great short video - would love to see one of your longer road tests in it - it’s certainly an acquired taste, compared to the VAG group hot hatches, but, I have always enjoyed being a bit left field with my car choices

Never been a huge Honda fan but I did have an FN2 for a while, which I kinda regret getting rid of, because it really surprised me how good it was. Very stiff and the power band can be a bit frustrating at times but it handled brilliantly and, when you got a change to really stretch its legs, it really was massive fun chasing the VTEC crossover and redline. However, I massively miss my Cupra 290 DSG more!

Nice film. Honda have offered a black interior in the past for people who want that (on the FK8 Sportline and on the FD2), they should do that again IMO.

Nice review, but interesting that despite these being out for 2 years I don't think I've ever seen one on the road!

I am a fan of VW's more mundane offerings and always end up back in one when the daily needs replacing. But for performance I am a JDM man and Id have the Civic over any of the ubiquitous hot golfs - but for the price. Tbh though, I am yet to be persuaded to replace my V5 STi RA with anything more modern - as quick, more raw and more fun. Just getting very expensive to keep on the road...

Great car. I drove a ep3 for 16yrs not one problem. I dont like the black spoiler they should have kept it body coloured. And the seemed to have dropped the nighthawk black too
  • Interesting review. I would be interested to know what you think of other rivals, like the 128Ti, Megane RS and i30N.

Its only expensive if you cant afford it like anything in life, compared to a golf really, i mean the golf is a golf with a golf chassis, golf gearbox, golf brakes, Type R is a bespoke car thats comes with extras as the base...only true petrolheads will notice or even know the difference, which is good IMO.
