When scenes of suffering in Amersham were broadcast to the world in January 2008, some of the horses were brought into the care of World Horse Welfare.

Owner Jamie Gray was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering and failing to meet the welfare needs of a total of 125 horses. He was given a 24 week prison sentence, a lifetime ban on owning horses and was ordered to pay £400,000 costs. In this video World Horse Welfare Hall Farm Manager Sue Hodgkins reveals the story behind what happened to the Amersham horses, their rehabilitation and what the future holds for these horses.

  • When they released those two horses after their long confinement, my heart just burst with happiness seeing their joy. That is what rescuing these glorious creatures is all about.

I hate animal cruelty. It is so heart breaking. What is wrong with these people. If I had an animal I could no longer care for I would take it to a place that could take care of it. It is heartbreaking and these poor animals don't deserve abuse. Thank you for caring for these animals.

Thank you to all the wonderful, dedicated caregivers and Vets of World Horse Welfare, who rescue these poor, abused horses! God bless you! It is such a joy to see them fat and happy, frolicking in their lovely green pasture!
  • Watching the horses run, buck, and roll in the grass when they were finally able to go out of doors made me smile happily. All of you that took care of them for those six months have to have felt the same way!
  • @Nizingur
4:09 NO walk or trot inbetween - just straight into ecstatic bucking canter! BEAUTIFUL.
  • @mefford67
I work as an equine specialist with equine psychotherapy and I cannot imagine coming into the stables and not hearing all the whinnies and movement that greet me every single time. Utterly heartbreaking that these gorgeous creatures were kept in such horrific conditions!
  • YOu guys are amazing. You help animals with no voice, have a voice and a second chance. You guys are heros and my idols.

FIRST OF ALL.... RESCUE TEAM... WHAT TRUELY WONDERFUL KIND PEOPLE YOU ARE, WISH THERE WERE MANY MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU IN THE WORLD. WAS VERY HEART WRENCHING WATCHING THE STORY ON VIDEO, SO, CANT EVEN IMAGINE HOW YOU ALL MUST HAVE FELT DURING THE FIRST FEW MOMENTS IN ARRIVING. THE SADNESS & ANGER YOU MUST HAVE FELT WHEN FIRST SEEING THESE POOR HORSES, LIVES HANGING ONLY BY A THREAD, LIVING IN SUCH AN UNINHABITABLE, DIRTY, BARE MUDDY FIELD, HORSES BEING SUBJECTED TO ALL THIS ROTTEN TORTURE BECAUSE OF ONE TOTAL ARSEHOLE OF A MAN . TOTALLY LOVED THE CHESTNUT HORSE WITH WHITE MAIN & FOUR WHITE SOCKS BUT THEY WERE ALL GORGEOUS HORSES. THE END WHEN YOU SEE THEM TURNED OUT INTO A HEALTHY GREEN FIELD IS SO CAPTURING IN SHOWING THE WORLD HOW GRATEFUL & HAPPY THESE HORSES REALLY FELT. AMAZING EMMOTIONS THESE RESCUERS WOULD HAVE FELT TOO. WAS SO BEAUTIFUL WATCHING THOSE HORSES JOY, RUNNING ABOUT & BUCKING & KICKING THEIR HEELS UP ON THE VIDEO CLIP. ... I JUST WONT EVER UNDERSTAND WHY THIS GUY DIDNT GIVE A DAMN WHILE CAUSING SO MUCH PAIN & SUFFERING OR WHY HIS HORSES WERE LEFT IN A HEAP TO ROT AWAY IN THAT BIG SHED.! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO WAS INVOLVED, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY IN THIS RESCUE , SAVING THESE POOR INNOCENT SOULS FROM THE LIFE THEY WERE ALL FORCED INTO & HAVING TO LIVE BY THIS ROTTEN EVIL EXAMPLE OF A MAN, WHO LEFT HORSES & THEIR BABIES STARVING & SORE, TO SLOWLY DIE THROUGH BEING STUCK IN THE WORST CONDITIONS EVER IMAGINEABLE. AGAIN I THANKYOU ALL FOR CARING & TAKING ACTION TO RELEAVE THESE POOR SAD CREATURES FROM PURE MISERY & FOR YOU EVENTUALLY TAKING AWAY ALL THE TERRIBLE AMOUNT OF DISCOMFORT & SUCH AWFULL ONGOING PAIN THERE IS NO DOUBT AT ALL THESE HORSES WOULD HAVE BEEN FEELING. SADLY THEY'D PROBABLY BEEN ENDURING ALL THE HORRORS WE SAW A LONG LONG TIME. GUYS ..... GOD BLESS YOU & ALL YOURS!... I LOVE AND ADMIRE EVERYONE OF YOU, FOR SHARING YOUR TIME, LOTS OF HARD WORK, TOTAL DEDICATION & FOR ALL YOUR KINDNESS WITH GIVING SO MUCH LOVE & COMFORT & SUPPORT, AS- WITHOUT ANY DOUBT IN MY MIND , WOULD SIGNIFICANTLY HAVE GREATLY HELPED, TOWARDS A MUCH HAPPIER, QUICKER HEALING PROCCESS FOR THESE LOVELY HORSES ALL OF YOU HAVE SAVED!. xxxxx
  • this is a great organization.  I've seen many horse sanctuaries and some of them have to be shut down because of money issues or even neglect.  the fact that Word Horse Welfare has enough money to give these horses large amounts of land to graze in and are able to keep the stables clean and tidy is a great thing. I'm tires of people making animal sanctuaries when they don't even have the means to do it.  Great work with the Amersham horses!
  • @KariKidd
The big black horse was just wonderful to watch being turned out. The look on his face when the girl unhooked the lead from his halter was a look of " Is this GRASS!! Are you kidding ME?? WEEEEE BOING BOING BOING REAR REAR REAR!!! Oh Lovely GRASS!!!" I am in America and I adore World Horse Welfare they have a great organization <3 Thank you for loving and rescuing these gorgeous babies from an unneccesary hell. The quiet in that barn had to deafening. No nickering or hay crunching? Unbelievable
  • @bcgrote
Glory Hallelujah! The field scenes sure make all that hard work worthwhile! Such joy, such a change from the frightened and ill animals you received. Thank you so much for all you do, your successes are counted in horse happiness, and that is not a little thing at all!
  • @aquaspirit96

  • @kerylcooper2314
Thank you for caring, I’m ashamed of human beings. God Bless you 😢❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋💋💋💋👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🙏🇺🇸
  • Thank God for people like you guys. I pulled from auctions in the USA and I cannot tell you the horrors that I saw. Things are a little better here for horses but not much better than they were. God bless The Rescuers of any species God bless those who care enough to be involved God bless you all
  • Really fantastic to see these horses looking well and enjoying themselves. This was a shocking case so well done to all involved.
  • @KingYoite
Seeing them turn out made me so happy, they were so happy and excited to run around again.
  • What a heartwarming ending. Eventhough the surviving horses were in ill health and distressed, their recovery wad heart warming. They are beautiful creatures. To the horses, have a sweet and restful rest of their lives with love, all 5 needs, freedoms and stars of true happiness.
