I never hire anyone who contacts me unsolicited, especially if they knock on the door.

Had someone posing as PGE technician, wanted to come inside and check our water heater. My elderly mother was home alone, thank goodness she didn’t let them in and called our neighbor right away.

I had a fake Gas company employee try to con me to enter my home. He had a tire gauge on a hose in a bucket, claiming that "detected gas" he even had a truck with the gas company logo. He left immediately when i called the gas company to confirm his employment. There was no gas leak.

If anyone rings your doorbell. NEVER open There is no reason to open the door, even for police. NEVER open your door, regardless of reasons or Y, do not talk through the door for long, as one is keeping you busy at the front door, their partner can be coming in the back door.
  • Never answer the door to strangers. Make enough noise to let them know the house is occupied so if they are knock knock burglars they won't attempt to break in. I don't ever answer the door to anyone unexpected, even if I know them. It's rude to drop in without notice. We are never obligated to respond. Friends call or text. They don't just show up, contrary to what's portrayed on sitcoms.

There's one going around, especially during Christmas. It's a text from the usps saying that they can't deliver your package unless you pay for shipping, giving them your card information. The usps will never text you.

I checked the roofing company I was considering and found that their insurance was expired!

Also, don't take surveys. They may ask you who you bank with or your age, just a little bit of information they need to get personal information about you.

Trust me when I tell you how I handle a door-to-door salesperson. I open the side door of my garage. Surprises them because they think I'll be at the front door. Then I yell at them, "get the f*ck out of here!" I'll do that twice, louder the second time. Works like a charm. It doesn't hurt that my Pitbull is barking his fool head off. Good boy, Ricky.

Great info I would just add....when meeting in person to buy or sell off FB or other sites, meet at police stations only. The police are happy to accommodate this. If the other person has bad intensions they wont show up or enter the station.
  • A few years ago, a young man 18 yrs old met some guys in broad daylight in an affluent area after hours to sell a gold necklace. He was shot but survived on the sidewalk. The guys were eventually caught. If you have to sell jewelry or coins, meet at a bank during banking hours. If they refuse to meet, they have bad intentions.

Who in their right mind would pay an unknown person 50% down?

Had many solar companies knocking on my door. Tell them no every time and why. Last one that came wanted my name. Said they have no reason to know my name. The last one at my door said solar and I said no and went back inside the house. It is good to have 3 doors to pass to get into your house. Trust no one.
  • If someone knocks on my door selling/advocating/anything, I simply ask them if I called them for the service. When they answer "No", I tell them that I only do business with companies/people that I initiate. Same with phone calls. If I don't recognize the number/name/or if it is only a city/state, I answer (loudly) "Joe's Bar and Grill. How can I help you." There is normally a pause and a soft click and a voice starts. I state "We don't take any computer-generated/activated calls, please don't call back." Normally, after my Joe's Bar answer, there is a soft click and then dial-tone.

I have had women say they have text wrong number and began to say they like to get to know me. Before you know it, they can't pay for something. They will always ask for a Apple gift card... thanks Jason

The obituary scams are the reason I prohibited the funeral home, hospital, and M.E.'s office from putting my late wife's obituary in the paper.
