In this video, Liam Lawson helps me explore the world of Super Formula - Japan's premier open-wheel racing series. We discuss the insane performance level of the cars, the challenges of a single-season in Japan, and how this helped him to be even better prepared to race in Formula 1.

Liam Lawson replaced the injured Daniel Ricciardo in Zandvoort, after his accident and injury in Free Practice 2.

If you want to see the whole interview, I'll publish it soon! Members of my F1 Data Analysis newsletter get early access to the entire 40+ minute discussion with Liam.

Liam held his own at AT. I really hope to see him on the F1 grid soon.

I think that Liam is a super highly adaptable driver. That's why he was strong in DTM, Super Formula and at his sudden F1 debut.

Another thing to add, most Super Formula drivers are also drivers in Super GT. Some of them are literal veterans with lots and lots of experience as well. Super GT has always been Japan's premiere racing series followed by Super Formula and then Super Taikyuu (at least from what I've seen).

This year was the first time I watched SF. It was great. Brilliant racing series with some great drivers. I hope that Iwasa can emulate what Lawson did this year or what Gasly back in the day.
  • Ayumu is going to SF next year.. I'm so hoping he's gonna gonna have a chance to drive an F1 car too!! Can't wait to see his FP1 with alphatauri this Friday

Nice preview, SF seems Super Cool and LL is a great interview-ee. Looking forwards to more!

As a Japanese Motorsports fan, It glad to see that SF gets attention from whole worlds, and see drivers from SF fighting in bigger stage is truly amazing. So I would like to see more drivers come to Super Fomula.
  • This is so great. Watching a driver like Liam, that has proved that he can actually drive an F1 car (looks at "Sir Lancelot") is actually amazing. Most of these guys haven't finished High School but they can talk shop with a Master in Mechanical Engineering. That should tell you at least "something".

I think it’s so interesting how measured Red Bull is being with Liam’s development path. Completely opposite to the way they rushed Albon

Finally some insight to SF. I like the racing a lot and caught some races this year, but it's really hard to get into as even the english website features more japanese than english πŸ˜‚ Great video as always dude. πŸ’ͺ

Liam Lawson's performance was outstanding. I do hope to see him in F1 soon.

I 100% see Liam as a teammate for Max. The guy was the surprise of the season honestly.

Oh my god that came totally out of the blue. Really interesting interview. I think you're exactly the right person for such interviews that lean on a more specific aspect of F1. In Interviews when it gets to more technical aspects of driving you can sometimes see the drivers pull back a little to "dumb it down" for the interviewer/audience. I feel like with you (and this specific audience) drivers don't have to fear being "too much" or "too boring" in their answers to a certain subject. For me, I never knew that much about Super Formula so your insight about the Pole/Win ratio and Liams explanations were great. Looking forward to more of these. Congrats Blake :D

Really fantastic video! I liked how well you broke down each aspect of why SF is challenging, keep it up πŸ‘

banger video. one of the best i've seen of the series having watched it this year. can't wait for next year. i'm really looking forward to Miyata in F2 specifically as most competitors don't leave japan. Nojiri for example would have been a mainstay of the F1 grid if he moved over
  • @d.k.n4803
I personally don't like how SF is being referred to as F1's training ground. Its a series that holds up all on its own..
  • @j0rtsy
Great video. Got my sub. Liam was great during his stint, I’ll have to start diving into SF.
  • @nathanmadox3364
One thing that's completely understated in this video, which to be fair is not the focus great vid, is just how much Japan love super formula. For the racers and the fans, SF might as well be the pinnacle of motorsport. So not only do drivers get all the benefits you to mentioned, but they get to experience what it's like to be a true superstar.
