The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square present Mack Wilberg's arrangement of "The Holy City" with guest soloist Stanford Olsen. The song is composed by Stephen Adams with lyrics by F. E. Weatherly.

Lyrics:
Last night I lay asleeping,
There came a dream so fair,
I stood in old Jerusalem,
Beside the temple there.
I heard the children singing,
And ever as they sang,
I thought the voice of Angels
From Heav'n in answer rang,
I thought the voice of Angels
From Heav'n in answer rang:
"Jerusalem, Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna to your King!"

And then I thought my dream was chang'd,
The streets no longer rang,
Hushed were the glad Hosannas,
The little children sang.
The sun grew dark with mystery,
The morn was cold and chill.
As the shadow of a cross arose,
Upon a lonely hill,
As the shadow of a cross arose,
Upon a lonely hill.
"Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna to your King!"

And once again the scene was chang'd,
New earth there seemed to be.
I saw the Holy City
Beside the tideless sea,
The light of God was on its streets,
The gates were open wide,
And all who would might enter,
And no one was denied.
No need of moon or stars by night,
Or sun to shine by day,
It was the new Jerusalem
That would not pass away.
It was the new Jerusalem
That would not pass away.
"Jerusalem! Jerusalem
Sing for the night is o'er,
Hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna forever more!
Hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna forever more!"

His face, his eyes, his voice. He looks like he is singing of something he has seen. Such a rendition can only be achieved when one has truly experienced the messiah and hopes for the glory to come and the resurrection morn!! Hallelujah
  • I am a Seventh-Day Adventist but I must recognize that this is the best choir of the Earth. Thanks for praising our Almighty God in the correct way.

I first heard this song in church when I was between 4-6 years old--I was riveted, it took my breath away! The singer was an older man with a deep bass voice, and I always wanted to be in church in case he sang it again. I'm 69 now and I love this song as much as I did the first time I heard it! :)
  • In my later years I have become immobile, when I hear this song I close my eye s and picture myself. In the most beautiful Cathedral

This brings tears to my eyes everytime I listen to it. I can only imagine the volume and size of the Heavenly choir someday! His voice just gives me a hint of it with the choir singing with him! Love love love it!

I used to sing this every Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. I always cried after singing it and it took all my might not to cry for the second verse. Thank you Jesus for dying for me. I love you with all my heart, mind and soul.

My Dad used to sing this for us when we were small children. What I wouldn't give to hear him just once more.
  • It's just after Easter 2020. They buried our Lord but they couldn't keep him down. Corona virus is everywhere but so is God. Jesus is risen and he will carry us through this pandemic!

One of the most beautiful and moving hymns ever composed. His rich, baritone voice, along with the choir and orchestra make this an unforgettable song to God.

I don't usually make comments - but this is so outstanding as an inspiring musical performance that I just had to say it.
  • His beautiful voice is astounding! When that is combined with the tear in his eye and his facial expressions telling stories all together it was impeccable.

I was going to stay home from Church this morning, but after having listened to the wonderful voice of Mr, Olsen and the great MTC, I am headed for Church and to worship my Savior, Jesus Christ...Thank you for sharing.

Can I like this a million times? I love the way it was sang, it feels like he was delivering a sublime message... I can picture the message of the lyrics in my head as he sang it. I love music when it edifies.
