The year of 2018 will mark the 250th anniversary of Anthracite mining in the Anthracite region of Pennsylvania. Anthracite coal mining was essential to the region's economy, and most towns were brought into being only because of the mining activities. Dressed up with a pre-celebratory 250th number plate and banner, along with a Lehigh & New England 3 Chime on her whistle valve, is Central Railroad of New Jersey 0-6-0 "Switcher" #113, an anthracite burning engine based in the town of Minersville and a very fitting representative of the region's heritage. Today, December 3rd, 2017, the massive 113 will operate on three excursions over the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern's Minersville and Schuylkill Haven Branches as part of the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway's Santa Trains. Take a ride behind one of the Northeast's finest steam locomotives in this exciting video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!

This video was filmed on December 3rd, 2017

Very special thanks goes out to Tyler Fenderson!

That L&NE Longbell is the closest ANYONE is going to get to recreating the legendary Blue Comet Longbell.
  • It would be amazing to see 113 pull a couple of the remaining Blue comet coaches, maybe that will happen some day.

My Dad Bill Artley and his brother George and Brother in Law Karl Bauman were from Catawissa and all Reading R.R. Fireman/ Engineers during this period of time.

I missed my Grandfather Wilbur Bauman and  Luther Artley. Wilbur was a Telegraph Operator at the switching yard in Rupert, Pa. outside of Bloomsburg and Catawissa, Pa.  Wilbur was an Reading Engineer.

CNJ 113 should doublehead with BLW 26 one day and should also visit the Strasburg Railroad too.
  • Great video! Im curious though, it sounds like 113's rods clang alot louder than most steam engines. Is that just me hearing things?
