Before the corona lockdown in Italy we went there to visit an impressive abandoned NATO command bunker which was built during the cold war and got abandoned in the mid 90's.
It's one of the coolest underground locations we've been to.

I was stationed at the USAF base at Comiso, Sicily, Italy from 1987 to 1989. The base is listed on the big status board at 23:48, lower left, in yellow. The "GLCM" means it was a ground launched cruise missile base. I worked in Comms. Great video, brought back some memories!

The white crystals on the ground is saltpeter aka Potassium Nitrate. Common food preservative. Also grows through concrete structures in the presence of moisture.
  • Thank you, nice video, as an Italian signal corps specialist when I was 19yrs old in 1984 ,i was stationed nearby and knew that base, those were the times when we still expected an invasion from the Warsaw pacts forces, we were really on the front line.

It's quite reckless to enter a place like this without oxygen sensors. With all that rust around you can might as well walk in to an area with low oxygen and never walk out of it. Quite common safety hazard inside non-ventilated areas on ships, but can occur even inside buildings. The biggest danger is that while human body can recognize high CO2, it will not recognize low oxygen.

Never understood why people make such an effort to get into these places and then trash them. Imagine how much more we could have learned if they were the first in.

This has a really strong Metro 2033 vibe... love it !

I used to live 20 minutes from this place and my uncle when was in the military used to work there for few months. The base it is called "NATO Proto Base", in the Caserta area, south of Italy.
  • No way I would ever crawl through such a small concrete tunnel! Impressive that these guys make such an effort!
  • I almost developed claustrophobia watching them in that under floor. Great video
  • @darrenwixon5897
Those tunnels you crawled through where the wires used to run would frighten me too much, you are all very brave!!!
  • So glad to see you taking PPE seriously....honestly so much asbestos was used in a lot of these military places and old soviet place too it makes common sense.

  • Thanks for bringing us along on this fantastic adventure! It was so interesting but I could never have crawled that way you did through the narrow space!!!! I could have been in trouble claustrophobia is obviously not a problem with any of you!! Awesome video content!!!

I am Italian and in my area there are numerous similar bunkers also dating back to the fascist era, below the historical center of my city (also under my house) there are military tunnels. I think I will visit this base in the future.

How are you not as famous as the proper people, I mean yall do more dangerous stuff then they do and go to some very interesting places..
  • This is few kms away from were I live, heard so many cool stories about it . I went to highschool nearby that base, Some days we skipped school and went messing around in one of the old (walled obviously) galleries that brings into the base ; there are many, some known, some complitely hidden. also, all the entrances, exits and service galleries have been walled! Some says it actually had a sea exit.
  • @HfLuo
Have been waiting for this episode for few days. Awesome explore, thanks for sharing! Also, please be safe :)
  • I would never crawl through the tunnel at the beginning far too claustrophobic for me
