It made a nice change from the sort of Turdtowns we normally visit on this channel I was very impressed. I came up with 8 reasons why the city of Carlisle in Cumbria is a great place to live! Let me know your favourite UK city!

Moving from London to England sounds quite attractive.
  • Myself and my partner moved to Carlisle less than a year ago from Cornwall. Best move we ever made, Carlisle has been great. Amazing history, great transport links, a high street that still has something going for it and some great places to eat out. The locals are great as well, very welcoming. Genuinely good people. Special mention to Hereford as well, very similar to Carlisle.

I've lived in Carlisle for over 20 years now and I couldn't agree more with this video. It gets a bad rep, so thank you for showing what Carlisle has to offer ☺️

I like the railway station in Carlisle. It has the be the only railway station in the whole of Britain that I actually don’t mind sitting and waiting to change trains. The atmosphere is pleasant and it’s never crowded which is always a bonus!

I grew up in Carlisle and couldn’t wait to get out. As soon as turned 18 and got my A levels I packed up, went to University and never returned to live there. I’m 40 now. When I do occasionally visit, I am very struck by all of the things you mentioned and I guess it is lovely to live when you are a bit older. As a teenager there I just felt so isolated. I am glad I’ve retained a bit of the accent though.

Fun fact, the pubs in Carlisle were state owned between 1916 and 1973, it was called the State Management Scheme. Even more of a fun fact, buying rounds of drinks was banned for the first three years of the scheme.

If I moved back to England I would consider Carlisle. If you are into camping and hiking, then you get the best of England and the best of Southern Scotland, all within a few hours drive. It is literally some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. On top of that the people there are much friendlier than down south, and thats coming from a Londoner.

I'm with you on the food. Comfort food such as pies, roast dinners and fish and chips seem a lot better up north.

The airport was commercialized right before lockdown and ended up going back to private use. We also have a grounded Vulcan bomber available to view without having to pay an entry fee. I often slate Carlisle but it is actually a really nice place to live and it's good to see it get some positive recognition as we're often so overlooked up here.

Carlisle is stupidly friendly. I came here in 2014 to do a speed awareness course - got done for speeding in England but Scotland (where I live) don't run the courses so I had to come to England to do it . Went for a night out afterwards and was adopted by friendly locals. The main entertainment street, Botchergate, has a barrier at each end so it can be closed to traffic on weekend nights to allow sozzled people to stagger around safely.

Moved here 2 months ago - though I'd been scouring the country for years looking at a perfect place to relocate. Superb place to live, relatively cheap too.

So glad to see my home town getting something nice said about it. As somone who grew up here you only realise how amazing and special Carlisle is until you move away. Always planned on heading back eventually.

As an Aussie who hasn’t visited the UK yet, I just love the history and buildings. Our history here is relatively young and I can’t wait to see it all for myself. Am coming next July, fingers crossed.

Carlisle's great! I stayed here one weekend and theres so much to see and do - Carlise Castle, Tullie House Museum, Bitts Park, Aviation Centre, the Citadel, the old courthouse, and so many good places to eat and drink. Not forgetting how close you are to Hadrian's Wall. Id move there too if i could.

Carlisle is a good place. Fantastic bookshop and cafe called Bookcase and the amazing Alexandros Greek restaurant. Most of the people are friendly too. The cathedral is beautiful too. Your on the mainline to Glasgow and London too.

Always nice to hear an outsider's take on Carlisle! Its a great city. Fun fact: The layout of the Lanes shopping bit actually follows the old victorian slum streets that were cleared to build it in the 80s.

Carlisle is pretty nice from my experience, good to see it get the reputation it deserves :)

We visited Carlisle last year on our trip to the UK from the US. It was one of my favorite spots. The views on the train from Glasgow to there and then from there to London were breathtaking. The city has such a cute atmosphere and everyone we met was incredibly friendly. 10/10 would recommend and would love to come back one day.

I don’t know if I ever make it to Carlisle, but it’s uplifting to know that there are still nice places. Perhaps subscribing to this channel makes a bleak sentiment creep in in the long run.
