WESTERN MARYLAND 6573 Hagerstown Reunion / CONRAIL over McCoy's Ferry Trestle 1990

Published 2023-12-23
WM GP40 6573 returns to Hagerstown Yard and turns on the wye. This was the period when, in mid-1990, that 6573 was void of its front and rear "WM" logo. Fortunately it was reapplied and CSX gave up its quest to strip it of its proud heritage.

Conrail units lead a westbound train, made up of 9 covered hoppers and 143 coal empties (152 cars), across McCoy's Ferry Trestle on the CSX West Subdivision (former WM).

  • Back in 1978 or 79 we stopped in Cincinnati(Stockyards)B&O terminal. They were just about to put a WM SD40 through the wash rack.(BTW, the first loco I ever see go through the rack was a B&O Alco switcher!) Anyways the WM was a bit dirty and faded. After going through it's bath I was amazed! The colors were amazing. Just like it was new. They them gave it a spin on the turntable. We were taking pic after pic after pic as the water evaporated and the colors began to fade. (It was in red/white/black paint) This was just a couple of years before the roundhouse burnt up. My first trip to Hagerstown was in 1977, saw both BL2s.
