There is a fortress above, suggesting this is a postern gate. These were secret doors connected to hidden passageways elsewhere in the fort to be used as "sally ports" for launching quick raids on a besieging force or for a hasty and sneaky evacuation. The door's height off the ground points to access for defenders but not attackers. Since the builders left no information, that would seem to point to a secret - and likely military - use.

Someone at some point in history carved out the chamber in the rock for some purpose. Then they sealed it up. So maybe it was a burial chamber.
