Moving America's Soul on Suicide | The Official Film

Published 2024-02-02
Tragedy doesn’t always happen to someone else, but even if it did, would you help if you could?

“Anyone can get broken.” The words effortlessly formed by a marine who once did not believe them himself, until a tragic plane crash sent his life down a path he never thought possible. A teenage girl who doesn’t expect to grow up, and lacks the will to do so. A young boy tormented by his own spiraling thoughts he could not control. These are just a few of the thousands of stories that far too often end in heartbreak for family and friends. Silouan, Tonja, Kevin, Misha, Craig, and Ally each share their remarkable stories of triumph over trauma, pain, and mental health challenges. Follow them as Dr. Thomas Joiner takes a look into what leads a person to these dark places, but more importantly, how to help them find their way back.

Moving America's Soul on Suicide | Millions struggle and tens of thousands die every year... yet, America shrugs. Time for hope.

So often depictions of suicide in media only show the pain and anguish—which is real and needs to be understood. This was the first time I saw stories that included the sheer humanity in someone’s willingness to help: the moments where relationships, compassion, and human connection are what pull us over the ledge onto the side of life. Stories about the strength and courage to fight back and stay alive. Stories about the joy of living and what's possible if we stay. As a survivor, I feel seen, represented, and advocated for in this film. Thank you.

One of the worst things about depression is watching everyone else glide through life and fulfill their dreams.

Having the opportunity to sit and talk with each of these storytellers was such a blessing. I listened to them as they recounted some of the hardest moments of their lives, and how sure they were at those low points that the world would be better off without them. Then spending the day with their families and seeing how that couldn't have been farther from the truth. The world is a better place because all of you are in it, and my life is better for having met you.

The power of this documentary is in its storytelling about hope and resilience. In addition to individual views, I believe this is best used in training programs for disciplines such as primary care, pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, and peer supports. We need more exposure to stories like these during training so that clinicians and providers become more comfortable discussing suicide and develop the skills to walk alongside someone experiencing a deep low.

It was meaningful and moving to be able to see this film at the premiere. This is a beautifully produced film that highlights the remarkable stories of people who have lived experience related to suicide. They talk about their childhoods, including the ups and downs, and the factors that led up to their crisis points. While some may stop there, bringing the topic of suicide into public awareness, these individuals share their recovery stories. Actually, they share about more than recovery. They talk about finding meaning in their experience and transforming their lives, a process that can be called Post-Suicidal Growth. It's worthwhile to view and even better for the potential discussion, exploration, and discovery that could follow.

Absolutely beautiful film and the storytellers did a great job of showing that depression and suicide can affect anyone, and it doesn't always look the same. I stumbled on Kevin's story at a time when I was struggling much like each of the storytellers describe and he gave me hope and a sense that I was not alone. Since following him on social media I have seen the importance of talking openly about my struggles and spreading positivity so that others also know that they are not alone as well. Thank you to all involved in the making this film to shed light on such an important topic. 💜💜💜
