My friend Joshua Jackson just published his first book of photography, which is the culmination of 3 years of taking images through the night on the streets of Soho in London. In this video he gives us some great advice on how to approach long term photography projects, the crucial role of sequencing in story telling, and how to approach publishers for your work.

Share it on if you found this video helpful.

So excited for this video AND for the book to arrive. Thank you both for taking the time to make this one. In the process of publishing my book right now, I’m sure a lot of this will really resonate.

Finding a publisher is nearly impossible unless you have a huge social media following. A publisher only cares about one thing and one thing alone: finding the quickest, safest and fastest route to profitability. The subject matter or image quality doesn't matter, only what will make them money. On top of that there's no shortage of excellent photographers wanting to publish a photo book and what publishers choose to publish is highly, highly subjective. The chances of getting your photo book published are about the same as winning a high dollar lottery. Thankfully there are some very good options for self-publishing. If you're successful there finding a publisher for your next book will be much easier. When you publish you get to see your work in a new form and light. Someday adding it to the Internet Archive will allow it to live forever.
  • Just another reason why your channel is such a shining light on this platform Sean. So well made. "Whatever your goals or aspirations, the work will give you your answers." Just gold.

All journeys start with the first step, no matter how big or small. If we look too far into the distance, we will be afraid of making that first step. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Joshua's work has taught me a whole different way of seeing. His work is pretty amazing. I'm super excited for the book. I also really appreciate his insight into publishing.

Sean, thank you for supporting Joshua K. Jackson’s work. Not only are you supporting the work of another excellent photographer but Josh, is a gold mine of insight.  He says “Just start. ... the work will give you the answers.” He also says “It was more about balance, harmony, and flow.” Jackson’s perspective may sound simplistic but it’s not. Rather it reveals an entire aesthetic path on how to go about being an image maker. Finally I note this video reveals an essential kindness that you bring to this very demanding work of producing one or two videos each month. Yet you share the spotlight with another. Nobody is twisting your arm to do this yet you do. Thank you for your hard and kind work.
