Emotional Intelligence - big ideas

Emotion helps us remember a particular situation by attaching feelings to it

They also push us to take action

But sometimes they can lead us to make bad judgments or act irrationally.

And that’s because under a heightened level of emotion our brain is bombarded by tons of messages and some of those messages might bypass the rational brain and go directly to the emotional brain. And that can trigger us to act suddenly

To be able to self-control, we should learn to create a sense of self-awareness that allows us to recognize and name our feelings.
Then being able to tie our feeling to a cause or the reason why we feel is a good way to challenge our emotion. Since emotion depends on how we see the situation.

Finally to sooth down undesired feeling instantly, we can do it in three steps.
- Recognize the feeling as soon as we feel it or on the early stage
- Challenge the thought that triggers the surge of emotion
- Shift into positive mindset by thinking about pleasant time

Being in control of them has many other advantages like improving our interaction with people. Since it’s easier for us to recognize how people would feel in different environments since we can project ourselves in their situation.

I've been looking everywhere for solutions for my low EQ. I just found out that a low EQ caused a lot of the problems i suffer from and i really want to change. Thanks to this, i have no friends since either they'll get more distant or i get more distant due to the fact that i have a poor understanding of how they feel and i tend to shift the blame from me, aka onto them. It's hard for me to control my emotions, especially sadness and i have a lot of trouble communicating with people, so i end up staying alone because it's safer and less stressful for me, but all i want is a happy social life. I never really had that.
