Strathfield Park is Strathfield’s oldest and most popular park providing a wide range of sporting and recreational facilities and opportunities. Events such as Carols by Candlelight, Australia Day and Summer Programs such as Movies in the Park are held in Strathfield Park.
Strathfield Park is the oldest public park in the Municipality and is ideal for large community functions. The park is popular due to its children’s playground facilities situated within close proximity to seating and BBQ areas. The premier playground includes a 2225 sq mtr area inclusive of all abilities playground equipment, along with a modern, high integrity playground. On the Chalmers Road side there is an educational kids bike track.
The layout is such that it offers the visitor a unique and diverse number of recreational opportunities, from structured sport to more private areas ideal for family picnics.
History
Strathfield Park was originally the site of a private golf course before being publicly acquired in the early 1900s by the NSW Government. Strathfield Park was dedicated on 11 February 1914 by the NSW Government, following a ballot of local residents to select the site. Strathfield was adopted as the name of the Municipality in 1885, taken from John Hardy’s home ‘Strathfield’. For a time during WWII, the Australian Army requisitioned Strathfield Park and it was used as an army camp. Strathfield Park was extensively renovated in the mid-1980’s.
