Talk International Editor Isabel Oakeshott says protests on Wednesday ‘didn’t need placards saying refugees welcome’.

Thousands of peaceful anti-racism demonstrations appeared to quash fears of further violent disorder on Wednesday night despite the threat of more than 100 planned protests.

Counter demonstrators in towns and cities across the country such as Birmingham, Middlesbrough, Walthamstow and Sheffield gathered with placards reading “Stamp out Islamophobia” and “No to Racism”.

Despite the majority of forces facing very little trouble, the Metropolitan Police said about 50 people gathered in North End Road, Croydon, south London, and had “made clear their intention is to cause disruption & fuel disorder”.

Isbael says: “Images of so called anti-fascist demonstrators are going to rile up those who feel their voices aren’t heard on these issues.”

  • I simply do not understand how anyone can think having completely open borders is a good idea.
  • @Jerseyboondocks
Why does the government call it right-wing protests, but never labels anything as a far left protest? That definitely looked like a far left protest to me.

A bunch of people advocating for the demise of their own culture.
  • I'm not British. I'm Asian and living in the Asian country of my birth. What has happened to the demographics in the UK over the last 10/15 years is called social engineering. It is deliberate and serve certain political and socio-economic aims. We've seen this unfold here where a certain state with large Christian population was replace by illegal Muslim immigration from a neighbouring country. These immigrants were given citizenship and have now become a guaranteed vote bank for those who engineered the "social engineering". And this was quickly followed by control of levers to power and natural resources by the Federal Government and their cronies. Its too late for us the small Christian minority in the state but for England and the British Isles generally, you are at an inflection point. If you stay silent, then you will be relegated forgotten and become a footnote of history for your children and grandchildren. That's my people's fate. I hope it doesn't become yours.

How many people are you going to welcome in before our communities collapse ? Nothing racist or far right about being concerned , our island is not getting any bigger, in fact quite the opposite given the lack of homes and services.

I’m 75 so I’m not going to be here much longer but the beauty of the “Refugees welcome here” youngsters is that they are the ones who will be crying in a few years time that they have no hope of a nice life because there are too many people in this country.

It's not that people feel their voices aren't being heard It's the people are being ignored by the people in power

3 Rioters jailed within days after assaulting a copper. 2 men in the airport assaulted 2 coppers. Not in jail. 2 tire policing is on show.

The government must be fuming that the working class didn't fall for their little plan.
  • Keir will want all the British into work and pay their taxes to keep the immigrants in fancy hotels
  • What I disagree with is pro pallestine demos supporting a terrorist organisation Hammas and celebrating death of 1100 innocent people. No one in this demos are demanding release of hostages still held by Hammas. Hypocrisy do as we say not as we DO! AMEN
  • @WesternWomanUK
So nasty Islam with swords , and nasty left ! Out together
  • Everyone at that protest might as well have had a placard that said, "hey thugs on the Muslim side, please don't attack me, I'm on your side, whatever you believe."
  • @mainwaringjohn
I am not racist. I am not religious. But I am 100% behind protecting our Christian and National identity.
  • @ant7936
How long until we see a placard saying, Refugees Welcome IN MY HOUSE ?
