The marriage of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip on the 20th November 1947 was supposed to be a low-key family affair, but it became an extraordinary moment of celebration to raise the spirits of a world broken by war. Brought to life through stunning colour archive, and with access to exclusive behind the scenes footage, this landmark documentary tells the story of how the wedding captured the hearts of a nation. It celebrates the contributions of all those who made the wedding such a unique occasion, from those on the inside including members of the royal family, through to the jewellers and dressmakers. At the heart of the film are stunning recreations of the engagement ring and the wedding cake.

From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

I'm touched with the kindness and generosity of the common people for this wedding.

The way they looked at each other said it all. Such a lovely couple.

And now they have been married for 73 years-the longest marriage of any british royal!
  • My grandmother had lived though 5 monarch, starting with Victoria and ending with Queen Elizabeth the second. The history she had lived though and what she had seen amazes me.

I remember as a little girl being taken to see the then Princess Elizabeth's wedding dress which toured the country after the wedding. The post-war years were terribly drab: bomb sites, rationing of clothes and food, shortages of fuel etc. so the sight of this beautiful dress, sparkling with crystals, subtly lit in a glass case, was utterly breathtaking - the sort of dress that I had seen only in pictures of fairy princesses in my story books - a wonderful memory.

How wonderful there were people still around to interview for this. Also, so many people who had something to do with this were 19, lol
  • My parents were married that same year in July. My father had served in WWII also. They are both gone now but we still celebrate their anniversary with photos and memories. It was an extraordinary time in history.

i like that The Queen was held in such high regard even as a princess that people from all over, from all walks of life, were willing to give what little THEY had in order for the princess to "have her day" with all the trimmings of a wedding day. THAT'S really cool and the kind of character that could be found.....back in the day.

Thank you for sharing. Wonderful to see. My mum absolutely loved this.

I do wish they would make it clear to people that Elizabeth did not PAY for her dress with coupons. That idea has gotten hold, especially here in the states, among people who know very little history. I see often on programs that the princess was so frugal that she paid for her dress with coupons. Of course, one paid for the items one bought, but had to produce ration coupons to give you Permission to purchase an item. The coupons did not take the place of cash. It was indeed a beautiful dress, and the details were in the embroidery scalloped down the flared skirt.
